The Behavioral Health Needs of Youth With Preexisting Psychiatric Disorders in the Aftermath of COVID-19
Children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders are a sizable population of children and youth with special health care needs. While the capabilities of behavioral health resources to meet these youth's needs were already strained, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic extended resource limitations just as this subgroup of children and youth with special health care needs faced new stressors and potential exacerbations of their underlying psychiatric illnesses. In this article, we provide a brief narrative review of the factors' manifestations with an emphasis upon their disproportionate impact upon children...

The Behavioral Health Needs of Children with pre-existing psychiatric disorders in the Aftermath of COVID-19
On December 7th, 2021, the United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in which a national youth mental health crisis was highlighted as being exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2021).   The advisory emphasized the presence of a pre-existing and alarming youth mental health crisis. Children and adolescents with pre-existing psychiatric disorders are a sizable population of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), and our mental health service system was already strained to support these youth. Down Syndrome Outreach During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Interprofessional Zoom WhatsApp Collaboration in Syria
The COVID-19 pandemic has strained health care systems globally, resulting in limited access to health care for the vast majority of patients, including children (Buser& Taha, 2022). Global pandemic restrictions have temporarily discontinued or reduced vital child health care services, including immunization, nutrition services, community-based welfare, and early child development programs (Kyeremateng et al., 2022). For example, Bhattacharyya and colleagues (2022) found that more than 68 countries had disruptions in immunization programs, leaving an estimated 80 million children unvaccinated against preventable diseases (...

Family Engagement in Services During COVID-19: A Mixed-Methods Study of Caregiver and Staff Perspectives
The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented stressors for people across the globe. Emerging literature demonstrates uneven stressors for those in underprivileged and underserved groups (Czeisler et al., 2021a; Siegel& Mallow, 2021; Srivastava et al., 2021; van Dorn et al., 2020) and families and women with children (Brown et al., 2020; Connor et al., 2020; Czeisler et al., 2021b; Stockman et al., 2021). People experienced increases in food, housing, and work instability, as well as physical illness because of COVID-19 and a multitude of mental health and substance use challenges associated with isolation and a decrease in ...

Sleep in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities during COVID-19: An Integrative Review
Sleep issues occur at higher rates in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) than the typical population. Little is known about the impact of COVID-19 on sleep issues in this population. The purpose of this integrative review was to characterize studies during the COVID pandemic (years 2020 – 2022) addressing the prevalence and management of sleep issues in children and youth with NDD. Comprehensive database searches were used to identify articles, and 31 studies were considered suitable for this review. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Caregiver and Clinician Experience with Virtual Services for Children and Youth with Complex Needs during COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic, support services for children and youth quickly shifted to virtual means. To continue delivering essential, trauma-informed, specialized services, a center transitioned to providing most services by phone/videoconference. A quality improvement project using survey methods was conducted to determine if virtual delivery was timely and satisfactory for inpatient and outpatient care. Findings indicated services were timely, and caregivers appreciated the support received, felt a personal connection with staff, and confirmed services met their goals and expectations. The Reality of Accessing Care for Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increasingly common diagnosis worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that about 1 in 44 children are identified with ASD (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022). Of those identified, boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls (CDC, 2022). Although the cause of ASD is unknown, it occurs regardless of racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic factors (CDC, 2022). ASD is further categorized into three levels of support. ASD level 1 means that an individual “requires support,” level 2 means “requiring substantial support,” and level 3 means “requi...
