A-TEAM: An Interprofessional Approach to Mandated Reporting in the Hospital Setting
Reporting suspected child maltreatment in pediatric settings presents unique challenges. Variation in mandated reporter training may lead to discomfort and emotional dysregulation. Failure to collaborate inter-professionally potentially results in suboptimal care for vulnerable children and families. A-TEAM promotes awareness, transparency, empathy, a nonjudgmental strategy, and management by an interprofessional team when referring patients for child protective services evaluation. A faculty trained in pediatric trauma nursing led the development of A-TEAM. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Evaluating Policy Consistency in Preparticipation Physical Evaluations for High School Athletes
Sudden cardiac death in young athletes is a rare but tragic occurrence impacting families, friends, institutions, and communities. The causes of sudden cardiac death often go undetected because of the vague associated symptoms. High school athletes are required to complete a preparticipation physical examination (PPE). However, screening guidelines at the state level are flexible and can lead to an inconsistent cardiovascular assessment of student-athletes. A review of State High School Association guidelines for all 50 states and the District of Columbia evaluated consistency of current PPE policies and found variation in...

The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children and Youth With Special Health Care Needs
As pediatric health care providers navigate the immediate and long-term consequences of COVID-19, and emerging or future threats to health, we must consider the unique impacts of the pandemic and societal response to it on the most vulnerable in society. Children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) “have or are at increased risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions. They also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally” (McPherson et al., 1998). (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Impact of the Infant Formula Shortage on Breastfeeding Rates
One of an expectant parent's earliest decisions is whether to breastfeed or formula feed. The recent formula recall and subsequent shortage undoubtedly impacted that decision-making process (Abrams& Duggan, 2022; Doherty et al., 2022). Infant formula is derived from cow's milk protein or plant-based sources such as soy, and despite being specially formulated to contain the nutrients necessary for healthy growth, human milk is widely considered the optimal infant feeding choice. Although formula companies strive to replicate the qualities of human milk as closely as possible, unique factors such as immune-boosting propertie...

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in Adult Congenital Heart Disease Care
Adults with congenital heart disease face myriad difficulties in obtaining care from providers and hospital systems knowledgeable about their conditions and health care needs. Increasingly, specialized programs are being developed to provide services to the adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) population with beneficial results (Mylotte et al., 2014). However, many of these dedicated programs are based at university-affiliated children's hospitals, owing to the familiarity of pediatric cardiologists and congenital heart surgeons with ACHD anatomy and physiology.
