Identifying Congenital Heart Block in Primary Care

Congenital heart block (CHB) is a rare type of congenital heart disease described as an interference of the conduction of electrical impulses in the heart that control the contraction of the ventricles and the pumping of the heart. There are different types of heart block ranging in severity, with first-degree heart block being the least severe and third-degree (or complete) heart block being the most severe, along with second-degree Mobitz type I and second-degree Mobtiz type II. CHB is rare, with an incidence rate of 1 in 15,000 to 1 in 22,000 live births.
