COVID-19 and ocular implications: an update
ConclusionThe studies analaysed have some limitations. First, the sample size and the covered population consisted mainly of patients with mild disease. Moreover, the studies are often descriptive study, without a correlation analysis. Finally, no normal population was observed in the studies, so a normal control group should be included for comparison in future studies. With the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and with its high infectivity, it is necessary to rearrange ophthalmologist routine clinical practice in order to control viral spread and try to maximize patient and health-care provider ’s safety. Risk of eye infections in dental personnel and the need for its prevention: a case report
AbstractA lot of dentists and dental personnel are at high risk of contracting eye infections during operative procedures involving aerosols. As many may not be aware of it, they often ignore the precautions to be taken for prevention of such infections. This is one such case report of a dental intern where an eyelid infection arose shortly after she treated a patient with an infected tooth in an operative procedure. This case report emphasizes the importance of preventive barriers for the dentist, and that how special protective gear is required for doing restorative cases which involve dealing with infection. Acute bilateral granulomatous anterior uveitis as an extra-hepatic manifestation of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection: a case report
We report a rare case of bilateral granulomatous AU following hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in an immunocompetent patient. A 35-year-old male presented to our center with a chief complaint of pain and redness in both eyes 3  days prior to the presentation. The patient’s medical and drug history was unremarkable. He had a history of river water consumption 20 days prior to presentation. The patient was diagnosed with acute bilateral granulomatous AU. All routine work up to investigate the etiology of the disease w as unremarkable, except for the serology of acute HAV infection, which was positive. The patient was ...

Infectious endophthalmitis at a Philippine tertiary hospital: a ten-year retrospective study
ConclusionsThere was a higher proportion of post-traumatic endophthalmitis cases compared to traditional estimates but consistent with studies from China and Thailand. The majority of these cases involved younger children as well as  young to middle-aged males engaged in carpentry and construction work, implying a need for increased public health awareness and strengthening of childcare and workplace safety policies. Our microbiologic profile showed a lower proportion of Gram-positive infections and a higher proportion of mixe d pathogen infections compared to other studies. There was also a higher proportion of fungi ass...

Spontaneous hyphema associated with ocular syphilis
AbstractThe purpose of this case series is to illustrate a novel presentation of ocular syphilis. Two cases of ocular syphilis presenting with spontaneous hyphema are described, demonstrating that spontaneous hyphema can be caused by ocular syphilis. This association has not previously been reported. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Treatment of presumed Nocardia endophthalmitis and subretinal abscess with serial intravitreal amikacin injections and pars plana vitrectomy
AbstractA 64-year-old man with a past medical history of liver transplantation on chronic immunosuppressive therapy presented with gradual worsening of vision over 2  months in his right eye. His recent history ofAspergillus andNocardia pneumonia with positive bronchoalveolar lavage, in concert with vitritis and subretinal abscess, were concerning for endogenous endophthalmitis. A sputum culture and transbronchial lung biopsy stains grewNocardia farcinica although aqueous humor sampling was negative. He was treated with four serial amikacin intravitreal injections over the course of 4  weeks. Pars plana vitrectomy for ...

Unilateral acute anterior uveitis is associated with ipsilateral changes in the tear fluid proteome that involves the LXR/RXR pathway
ConclusionUnilateral AAU induced detectable changes in the ipsilateral tear fluid proteome and involvement of the inflammation-associated LXR/RXR pathway. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

A review of ocular adverse events of biological anti-TNF drugs
In conclusion, although there is increasing data on ocular adverse events, it remains to be seen whether the suggested link between TNF inhibitors and the onset of ocular inflammation is substantiated by more quality data. Nevertheless, the awareness of potential treatment side effects with anti-TNF should be highlighted. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

In vitro Susceptibilities of Methicillin-Susceptible and Resistant Staphylococci to Traditional Antibiotics Compared to a Novel Fluoroquinolone
ConclusionCompared to levofloxacin and moxifloxacin, the newer fluoroquinolone delafloxacin demonstrated the lowest MICs values and lowest rates of resistance for Gram-positive in-vitroS. epidermidis andS. aureus vitreous isolates. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Acute macular neuroretinopathy with coexistent central retinal vein occlusion as the presenting feature in intraocular tuberculosis
ConclusionAcute macular neuroretinopathy can complicate intraocular TB. Tuberculosis should be kept as one of the differential diagnosis in patients with AMN. Prognosis is generally good in patients of ocular TB presenting with retinal vascular occlusions. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion as a presenting sign of Acute Retinal Necrosis: a rare association
ConclusionWe report this case to highlight that occlusive vasculopathy can be a presenting sign of an underlying infectious etiology in any age group. BRAO was a rare presenting sign of ARN in our patient. A thorough peripheral examination is recommended in order to avoid missing infectious pathologies such as ARN which starts from the retinal periphery, progresses fast, and if not managed on time may lead to permanent loss of vision. Utility of wound cultures in the management of open globe injuries: a 5-year retrospective review
ConclusionsDespite a high rate of wound contamination, few cases of endophthalmitis (1.2%) were seen in this series. In no case did the results of wound culture impact choice of antibiotic prophylaxis or treatment. Cultures obtained at the time of open globe repair were not cost effective in the subsequent management of the injury. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)
