Clinical course, treatment and visual outcome of an outbreak of Burkholderia contaminans endophthalmitis following cataract surgery
ConclusionsA persistent and intensive treatment approach including total lens capsule and IOL explantation is recommended forBurkholderia contaminans endophthalmitis following cataract surgery and may lead to a favourable visual result. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Current concepts in the diagnosis and management of antiphospholipid syndrome and ocular manifestations
AbstractAntiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder associated with obstetrical complications, thrombotic complications involving both arteries and veins, and non-thrombotic manifestations affecting multiple other systems presenting in various clinical forms. Diagnosis requires the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. The exact pathogenesis of APS is not fully known. However, it has recently been shown that activation of different types of cells by antiphospholipid antibodies plays an important role in thrombosis formation. Ocular involvement is one of the important clinical manifestations of APS and can ...

Abducens nerve palsy with associated retinal involvement secondary to rickettsia typhi infection
ConclusionRickettsial disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of abducens nerve palsy in any patient with unexplained fever from endemic area. Fundus examination may help establish an early diagnosis and to start an appropriate rickettsial treatment. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Clinical outcomes of pediatric macular edema associated with non-infectious uveitis
ConclusionsAlthough only 15% of the pediatric patients with uveitis in the study cohort had ME, it is clinically important to conduct OCTs to detect ME in this population. Treatment resulted in 69% of eyes achieving resolution of ME by 12  months, accompanied with improvement in visual acuity. Corticosteroid injections were significantly associated with resolution of macular edema. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Common bacterial causes of external ocular infections, associated risk factors and antibiotic resistance among patients at ophthalmology unit of Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsBacterial external ocular infections linked with multi-drug resistance and resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline and piperacillin are high. Therefore, empirical treatment of eye infections in the study area needs to be monitored by regular antimicrobial-susceptibility testing of isolates. Persumed sympathetic Ophthalmia after scleral buckling surgery: case report
ConclusionSince SB is a procedure without manipulating intraocular tissues, it is considered to impose a low risk for SO. This report presented SO occurrence after successful SB. Some factors may induce SO, including inciting the choroid and retinal pigment epithelium with cryoretinopexy or perforating for drainage. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease is always bilateral: reports of unilateral cases failed to use choroidal investigations showing subclinical involvement of the fellow eye
ConclusionVKH disease results from a generalized autoimmune process against melanocyte associated antigens starting in the choroidal stroma. It can be asymmetrical but is always bilateral, as long as investigations such as ICGA, able to detect subclinical choroiditis, are performed. Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis manifesting as Bell ’s palsy and bilateral macular necrotizing retinitis: an atypical presenting feature
ConclusionSSPE in our case presented as Bell ’s palsy and sudden painless diminution of vision due to ocular involvement, and developed full blown disease within 2 months. SSPE can present as a diagnostic challenge and warrants early identification and referral for timely diagnosis and management. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Peripheral retinal arteriolar leakage in giant cell arteritis: a case report
AbstractA 76-year old African American female with a history of arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) secondary to biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis (GCA) presented with unilateral vision loss in her contralateral eye despite high-dose oral steroid treatment. Dilated fundus examination revealed three cotton wool spots. Fluorescein angiography showed slowed arteriolar filling with late staining of small peripheral arteries, consistent with small vessel arteritis. Laboratory tests for alternative vasculitides were negative. Review of her temporal artery biopsy specimen confirmed lymphoplasmacytic inflammation around sm...

Intravenous administration of Penicillin results in therapeutic intravitreal levels in chronic postoperative endophthalmitis
Conclusion and relevanceThis study shows that intravenous Penicillin G administered every four-hours allows for adequate intravitreal concentrations of penicillin. Future studies are required to determine if the results of this study translate into improved clinical outcomes. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)

Acute macular neuroretinopathy in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and deceased by COVID-19: a case report
ConclusionWe report a rare case of AMN following AML. Our findings support the role of ischemia in the outer retina, of which AML may contributed to the pathophysiological process. The patient has deceased less than 2 weeks from AMN initiation. (Source: Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection)
