Sex differences in outcomes of acute pancreatitis: Findings from a nationwide analysis
ConclusionsIn this large cohort of patients admitted for AP, despite being significantly older, we found that females had significantly improved clinical outcomes, including lower mortality, compared to males. Further prospective studies are needed to accurately understand these differences to guide clinical practice. (Source: Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery)

Usefulness of self ‐expandable metal stents for malignant biliary obstruction using a short‐type single‐balloon enteroscope in patients with surgically altered anatomy
ConclusionsSEMS placement for unresectable MBO using a short SBE in patients with SAA is effective and safe in similar ways to that in patients with normal anatomy in terms of bilateral stenting, stent patency, and reintervention. (Source: Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery)

Clinical Islet Transplantation: Current Progress and New Frontiers
AbstractIslet transplantation (IT) is now a robust treatment for selected patients with type 1 diabetes suffering from recurrent hypoglycemia and impaired awareness of hypoglycemia. A global soar of clinical islet transplant programs attests to the commitment of many institutions and researchers to advance IT as a potential cure for this devastating disease. However, many challenges limiting the widespread applicability of clinical IT remain. In this review, we will touch on the milestones in the history of IT and its path to clinical success, discuss the current challenges around IT, propose some possible solutions, and e...

A case ‐control emergency department‐based analysis of acute pancreatitis in Covid‐19: Results of the UMC‐19‐S6
ConclusionsAcute pancreatitis as presenting form of COVID ‐19 in the ED is unusual (<1 ‰ cases). Some clinically distinctive characteristics are present compared to the remaining COVID patients and can help to identify this unusual manifestation. In‐hospital mortality of COVID‐AP does not differ from COVID‐non‐AP but is higher than non‐COVID‐AP, and the higher severity o f AP in COVID patients could partially contribute to this increment. Effects of pancreatectomy on nutritional state, pancreatic function, and quality of life over 5  years of follow up
ConclusionsPatients undergoing pancreatectomy can return to their daily lives after 12  months. However, those with risk factors associated with pancreatic function and QoL need more careful follow‐up and supportive management. (Source: Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery)

Current status of pediatric deceased donor liver transplantation: Lessons learned from a high ‐volume center in Japan where living donation remains predominant
ConclusionsThe recent amendment of the organ allocation system, especially the introduction of pediatric prioritization, can effectively increase the chance to obtain deceased donor grafts for pediatric DDLT in Japan. The recent refinements in donor and recipient selection and in the surgical technique of split DDLT can improve the outcomes of pediatric DDLT in Japan. Regenerative medicine for the hepatobiliary system: A review
AbstractLiver transplantation, the only proven treatment for end ‐stage liver disease and acute liver failure, is hampered by the scarcity of donors. Regenerative medicine provides an alternative therapeutic approach. Tremendous efforts dedicated to liver regenerative medicine include the delivery of transplantable cells, microtissues, and bioengineered whole l ivers via tissue engineering and the maintenance of partial liver function via extracorporeal support. This brief review summarizes the current status of regenerative medicine for the hepatobiliary system. For liver regenerative medicine, the focus is on strategie...
