High case fatality rate in individuals with Down syndrome and COVID-19 in Brazil: a two-year report
Few studies have evaluated the outcomes of COVID-19 in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), which indicated a higher association between DS and longer hospitalisation time, COVID-19 severity and mortality rate.1–8 From these studies, four out of five have presented a small cohort with less than 40 individuals with DS and COVID-19,1–4 except one report that has included 750 individuals.5 Thus, the real effect of COVID-19 in individuals with DS is not entirely clear, and it would be important to know it, mainly for its importance as a risk factor for death. In this context, we compared the case fatality rate, the...

The thin red line: ileal angiodysplasia versus SARS-CoV-2-related haemorrhagic enteritis
We report the case of a female patient, aged between 50 and 60 years old, who presented with mechanical ileus sustained by intra-peritoneal adhesions. Her medical history was characterised by a transanal, endorectal pull-through for Hirschsprung’s disease of the left colon during her infancy; moreover, she underwent bilateral ovarian resection for pelvic abscess. These previous surgeries caused multiple hospitalisations for recurrent intestinal occlusions, two of which requiring surgical laparotomic adhesiolysis. The patient presented to the emergency department having abdominal pain, bloating and vomiting, associate...

Monitoring the SPREAD of the SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.621 in Udine, Italy
Introduction Since October 2020, the emergence of novel lineages of SARS-CoV-2 is generating widespread concern.1 They are characterised by distinct genetic features that might lead to increased transmissibility and/or immune evasion from previous infection or vaccination.2 Therefore, genomic surveillance gains and increasingly important role to track the emergence, the spread and the transmissibility of these lineages.3 Our unpublished data demonstrated the fast spread of the B.1.1.7 ((WHO)-designated variant of concern Alpha) lineage in our territory, reaching the 100% prevalence in about 2 months. The University Hospita...

Nationwide evaluation of mutation-tailored anti-EGFR therapy selection in patients with colorectal cancer in daily clinical practice
For a nationwide real-word data study on the application of predictive mutation testing of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) for anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapy stratification, pathology data were collected from the Dutch Pathology Registry from October 2017 until June 2019 (N=4060) and linked with the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Mutation testing rates increased from 24% at diagnosis of stage IV disease to 60% after 20–23 months of follow-up (p<0.001). Application of anti-EGFR therapy in KRAS/NRAS wild-type patients was mainly observed from the third treatment line onwards (65% vs 17% in ...

Comparative clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of micronodular thymoma and micronodular thymic carcinoma with lymphoid stroma
Conclusion MNTs and MNCs are rare and less aggressive forms of thymic tumours and can be differentially diagnosed by immunohistochemistry. (Source: Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Increased FNDC5/IRISIN protein expression in breast cancer tissue is associated with obesity in postmenopausal women
Conclusions Our results confirm that women with breast cancer and obesity exhibit an increased irisin expression in their tumorous tissue compared with women with breast cancer and normal BMI. Likewise, in vitro breast cancer cell lines have the capacity to synthesise and express FNDC5/irisin, without any extracellular stimuli, however the microenvironment surrounding these cells in vivo participates in its regulation. Malignant pleural mesothelioma with heterologous elements
Conclusions Although median survival was longer for osteosarcoma than for malignant mesothelioma, we could not differentiate mesothelioma from pleural osteosarcoma on the combined basis of clinicopathological and immunohistochemical data, and FISH analysis. However, diffuse growth was more frequent in mesothelioma than in osteosarcoma. (Source: Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Update on the current opinion, status and future development of digital pathology in Switzerland in light of COVID-19
Conclusions This survey indicates that the crisis acted as a catalyst in promoting DP adoption in centres where basic workflows were already established while posing major technical and organisational challenges in institutions that were at an early stage of DP implementation. Idylla MSI test as a new tool for microsatellite instability detection in sebaceous tumours and keratoacanthomas
Conclusion Idylla is more performant than PCR, for the detection of MSI in MTS-associated tumours and is a reliable additional technique to help detecting MTS in these tumours. (Source: Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Clinicopathological features and outcomes of coexistent light chain cast nephropathy and light chain deposition disease in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma
Conclusions Patients with LCCN+LCDD had similar renal outcome compared with patients with pure LCCN but the overall survival is much better. Thus, for patients with LCCN, especially those with restriction, pathologists should carefully evaluate the kidney specimens to exclude the possibility of combined LCDD. Biochemical abnormalities in COVID-19: a comparison of white versus ethnic minority populations in the UK
Conclusion Our data show for the first time that routine biochemistry at hospital presentation in COVID-19 differs between ethnic minority and white groups. Among the markers identified, CRP was significantly higher in the ethnic minority group pointing towards an increased tendency for severe inflammation in this group. Nuclear-specific accumulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) mRNA in TERT promoter mutated follicular thyroid tumours visualised by in situ hybridisation: a possible clinical screening tool?
Conclusions TERT mRNA seems to be focally expressed and localised exclusively to the nucleus in TERT promoter mutated follicular thyroid tumours, possibly reflecting a true biological and unorthodox phenomenon worthy of further investigations. (Source: Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Megarectum: systematic histopathological evaluation of 35 patients and new common pathways in chronic rectal dilatation
Conclusions In the largest case series reported to date, we challenge the current perception of idiopathic megarectum as a primary neuromuscular disease and propose a cellular pathway model for the features present. The severe morphological changes account for some of the irreversibility of the condition and reinforce the need to prevent ongoing rectal distension when first identified. Ranking of journals by journal impact factors is not exact and may provoke misleading conclusions
Every year in June or July, Clarivate publishes the journal citation reports of the year before. The most popular bibliometric parameter is the 2-year impact factor (JIF) which is used by researchers to decide where to publish and by scientific agencies or selection committees to evaluate scientists and journals. The 2-year JIF is usually highlighted on the journals’ home pages. Furthermore, Clarivate publishes rankings for specific scientific fields by ranking the journals by the JIF.1 This value is often highlighted in the advertising of a publisher with affirmations such as the rank of a certain journal has improv...
