Distinguishing laboratory characteristics in giant cell arteritis: a real-world retrospective cohort study
DiscussionThis is a real-world retrospective review of patients referred to ophthalmology services with concern for GCA. The pre-test probability of a patient referred with suspected GCA was 13.9% to have GCA, highlighting the need for specialist referrals to continue. White Cell Count (p = 0.01), Platelet Count (p = 0.02), Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p = 0.004) and C-reactive protein (p = 0.002) were significantly different between GCA and non-GCA cases. Moreover, this study demonstrates that absolute neutrophil count (p = 0.02) can be a useful parameter in initial investigations for GCA. (Source: ...

Long-term effects of intraoperative topical bevacizumab in sutureless scleral tunnel trabeculectomy: a prospective clinical trial
ConclusionSutureless trabeculectomy with topical application of bevacizumab showed comparable surgical success rates with conventional trabeculectomy and MMC in long-term follow-up. Additionally, adjuvant use of topical bevacizumab had a significant positive impact on long-term IOP control. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Development of interface haze after femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis with accelerated corneal crosslinking: a case series
ConclusionsThe development of clinically significant interface haze is a relatively rare complication after FS-LASIK Xtra but tends to have a higher incidence and intensity compared to conventional stromal surgery such as FS-LASIK. Timely treatment and close follow-up are essential to patients undertaking FS-LASIK Xtra. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Ocular residual astigmatism (ORA) does not seem to correlate with baseline refractive error among refractive surgery candidates
ConclusionsIn the studied population, ORA is not correlated with baseline refractive error. Every patient presenting for possible corneal-based laser refractive surgery should be evaluated for a possible high level of ORA, irrespective of their baseline ametropia level. Assessment of the specificity of corvis biomechanical index-laser vision correction (CBI-LVC) in stable corneas after phototherapeutic keratectomy
ConclusionCBI-LVC provided similar specificity in stable PTK patients compared to those who underwent PRK. These results suggest that the CBI-LVC could be a useful tool to aid corneal surgeons in managing PTK patients. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Atomic force microscopy for the evaluation of corneal surface roughness after femtosecond laser flap creation and excimer ablation
ConclusionsOur results show that the roughness of the surface treated with excimer is clearly lower than in the group with no excimer ablation; thus, the application of laser excimer after a flap created by femtosecond laser seems to soften the nano-irregularities created by this technique. Clinical comparative analysis of bacterial keratitis according to contact lens use: a retrospective study in a tertiary referral center of South Korea
ConclusionCLBK patients had a higher proportion of females, younger age, gram-negative bacteria, and better treatment outcomes than those of non-CLBK patients. There were no significant risk factors leading to PTO in either the type of CL or CL-related history. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Assessment interocular symmetry of peripapillary vessel density in young myopes with optical coherence tomographic angiography
ConclusionThe density of radial peripapillary capillaries decreased in the myopic eye with axial elongation, and optical vascular parameters showed significant interocular symmetry among young myopic eyes. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Development and progression of myopia in children during the COVID-19 pandemic in urban area in Turkey
ConclusionIncreased digital screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with a myopic shift in emmetropic children and myopic progression in myopic children. As a result of COVID-19, increasing cases of myopia should be addressed as a public health concern. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Comparison of myopia progression among Chinese schoolchildren before and during COVID-19 pandemic: a meta-analysis
ConclusionsCompared with the time before the COVID-19 home confinement, a higher rate of myopic progression among Chinese schoolchildren during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic was demonstrated. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Ophthalmology procedure trends in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic
ConclusionsThis study highlights the relative inverse relationship between COVID-19 cases and ophthalmic procedure volume in America. Quantifying ophthalmic procedure trends is important in retrospectively assessing surgical disruptions and prospectively accommodating delayed surgeries. Furthermore, awareness of these trends could help ophthalmologists prepare should similar disruptions occur in the setting of future pandemics or national disasters. Anterior segment complications after dexamethasone implantations:real world data
ConclusionThis study is the first long-term follow-up study in our country evaluating the safety of dexamethasone implant injections in various retinal diseases and presenting the first real world data. Cataract progression and increased IOP were found to be the most common side effects. We observed that the patient ’s diagnosis did not cause a statistically significant change in the observation of side effects. As a result of our findings, close follow-up of IOP after the injection of dexamethasone implants would be appropriate. (Source: International Ophthalmology)
