Potential use of heat shock protein 90 as a biomarker for the diagnosis of human diseases
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2023 Aug 14. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2023.2246883. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a protein involved in many different biological processes and especially in cell survival. Some of these functions require the participation of other biological molecules, so Hsp90 is a chaperone that takes part in many protein-protein interactions working as a critical signaling hub protein. As a member of the heat shock protein family, Hsp90 expression is regulated under certain environmental and/or stressful situations, therefore Hsp90 concentration can be monitored and ...

Anti-citrullinated protein antibodies as biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2023 Aug 14. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2023.2247986. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The serological biomarker anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) may have several functions but is especially important for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) along with clinical symptoms.AREAS COVERED: This review provides an overview of ACPAs, which are useful in RA diagnostics and may improve understanding of disease etiology. PubMed was searched with combinations of words related to antibodies recognizing epitopes containing the post-translationally modified amino acid citrulline in combinat...

Research tests for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2023 Aug 10:1-13. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2023.2240230. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Despite huge efforts, tuberculosis (TB) is still a major public health threat worldwide, it is estimated that a quarter of the global population is infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). For controlling TB and reducing Mtb transmission it is fundamental to diagnose TB infection (TBI) as well as the progressors from TBI to disease to identify those requiring preventive therapy. At present, there is no gold standard test for TBI diagnosis although several new methodologies have been attempted.AREAS C...

The significance of tissue-agnostic biomarkers in solid tumors: the more the merrier?
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2023 Aug 8:1-12. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2023.2245752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: To date, several emerging biomarkers have gained considerable interest in the field of predictive molecular oncology. The advent of precision medicine has led to the development of innovative drugs targeting rare molecular pathways independently from histology, defined as tissue-agnostic drugs.AREAS COVERED: Although there is a lot of promise for this new tissue-agnostic model in the oncological scenario, crucial issues from both the diagnostic and therapeutic standpoint are emerging. This review aims to c...

Cystic echinococcosis microRnas as potential non-invasive biomarkers: current insights and upcoming perspective
Expert Rev Mol Diagn. 2023 Aug 8. doi: 10.1080/14737159.2023.2246367. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis, also known as hydatidosis, is a zoonotic foodborne disease occurred by infection with the larvae of Echinococcus spp. which can lead to the development of hydatid cysts in various organs of the host. The diagnosis of echinococcosis remains challenging due to limited diagnostic tools.AREAS COVERED: In recent years, microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as a promising biomarker for various infectious diseases, including those caused by helminths. Recent studies have identified several novel miRNAs in Ec...
