Inhibition of Rho kinase (ROCK) impairs cytoskeletal contractility in human M üller glial cells without effects on cell viability, migration, and extracellular matrix production
In conclusion, pharmacological inhibition of ROCK in Müller cells could be a potentially promising approach to treat epiretinal membranes by preventing cell proliferation, contractility and transdifferentiation, without affecting cell viability.PMID:38043763 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2023.109745 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)

Impact of a 50bp insertion/deletion polymorphism of the superoxide dismutase-1 on oxidative stress status and risk of keratoconus
Exp Eye Res. 2023 Nov 29:109742. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2023.109742. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKeratoconus (KC) is characterized by the predominant primary ectatic disease, affecting the cornea, necessitating corneal transplants in some cases. While some loci associated with KC risk have been identified, the understanding of the disease remains limited. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes play a crucial role in countering the reactive oxygen species and providing protection against oxidative stress (OS). Accordingly, the objective of this study was to investigate a potential association of a 50 nucleotide base pairs (bp) i...

Influence of sex on chronic steroid-induced glaucoma: 24-Weeks follow-up study in rats
The objective was to evaluate ocular changes based on sex in steroid-induced glaucoma models in rats comparing healthy controls, over 24 weeks follow-up. Eighty-nine Long-Evans rats (38 males and 51 females) with steroid-induced glaucoma were analysed. Two steroid-induced glaucoma models were generated by injecting poly-co-lactic-glycolic acid microspheres loaded with dexamethasone (MMDEX model) and dexamethasone-fibronectin (MMDEXAFIBRO model) into the ocular anterior chamber. Intraocular pressure was measured by rebound tonometer Tonolab®. Neuroretinal function was analysed using dark- and light-adapted electroretinogra...

Proteomic analysis of aqueous humor reveals novel regulators of diabetic macular edema
Exp Eye Res. 2023 Nov 17:109724. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2023.109724. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetic macular edema (DME) is the most common cause of blindness in patients with diabetic retinopathy. To investigate the proteomic profiles of the aqueous humor (AH) of individuals with diabetic macular edema (DME), AH samples were collected from patients with non-diabetes mellitus (NDM), DM, nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and DME. We performed comparative proteomic analyses using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and bioinformatics analyses. We identified 425 proteins in these AH sampl...
