2D or not 2D? Mapping the in-depth inclination of the collagen fibers of the corneoscleral shell
Exp Eye Res. 2023 Oct 26:109701. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2023.109701. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe collagen fibers of the corneoscleral shell play a central role in the eye mechanical behavior. Although it is well-known that these fibers form a complex three-dimensional interwoven structure, biomechanical and microstructural studies often assume that the fibers are aligned in-plane with the tissues. This is convenient as it removes the out-of-plane components and allows focusing on the 2D maps of in-plane fiber organization that are often quite complex. The simplification, however, risks missing potentially important aspe...

The SNTB1 and ZFHX1B gene have susceptibility in northern Han Chinese populations with high myopia
In conclusion, G-C-A-G is a risk haplotype from the SNTB1 gene in high myopia patients. The minor T-allele of ZFHX1B rs13382811 is a risk factor for high myopia. SNTB1 and ZFHX1B are both risk genes associated with increased susceptibility to high myopia in the Northern Han Chinese population.PMID:37890754 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2023.109694 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)

Corneal epithelium models for safety assessment in drug development: Present and future directions
Exp Eye Res. 2023 Oct 25:109697. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2023.109697. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe human corneal epithelial barrier plays a crucial role in drug testing studies, including drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), as well as toxicity testing during the preclinical stages of drug development. However, despite the valuable insights gained from animal and current in vitro models, there remains a significant discrepancy between preclinical drug predictions and actual clinical outcomes. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on adhering to the 3R principles (refine, reduce, replace) to...

Topical Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) restores electrophysiological alterations in the Ins2 < sup > Akita < /sup > mouse model of diabetic retinopathy
In this study, we characterize the effects of topical NGF on neuroretina function, quantified with the electroretinogram (ERG). In particular, we show that NGF can ameliorate RGC conduction in the retina of Akita mice, which correlates with a recovery of retinal nerve fiber plus ganglion cell layer (RNFL-GCL) structure. Overall, our preclinical results highlight that topical administration of NGF could be a promising therapeutic approach for DR, being capable of exerting a beneficial impact on retinal functionality.PMID:37890756 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2023.109693 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)
