Physiology of the Weight-Reduced State and Its Impact on Weight Regain
Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by long duration, slow progression, and periods of remission and relapses. Despite the development of effective medical and surgical interventions and millions of people conducting tremendous personal efforts to manage their weight every year, recidivism remains a significant barrier to attaining long-term weight maintenance. This review aimed to explain the underlying physiology of the weight-reduced state including changes in energy balance, adipose tissue, genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that may predispose individuals to weight regain following weight loss. Importance of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Endocrinology
We dedicate the current issue of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America to patient-reported outcomes (PROs), an emerging field in health care delivery and research. Patients ’ perception about health and disease, including their quality of life (QoL) and the effects of treatment on their functional status, can be evaluated with general and disease-specific parameter instruments. Implementation of the PROs in the management of various endocrine disorder is currently un folding and offers opportunities for improved patient-clinician communication, education, and research. Patient-Reported Outcomes in Endoscopic Endonasal Skull Base Surgery
The functional outcome, quality of life, and patient feedback related to a chosen treatment approach in skull base surgery have become a subject of interest and focused research in recent years. The current advances in endoscopic optical imaging technology and surgical precision have radically lowered the perioperative morbidity associated with skull base surgery. This has pushed toward a higher focus on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). It is now critical to ensure that the offered treatment plan and approach align with the patient ’s preferences and expectations, in addition to the surgeon’s best clinical judgment an...

Management of Menopause Symptoms and Quality of Life during the Menopause Transition
Some women experience bothersome symptoms around the time of menopause that may have a negative impact on their quality of life and prompt them to seek treatments. Menopausal hormone therapy was historically the treatment of choice. However, medical contraindications and personal preference for nonhormonal therapy have prompted the evaluation of a range of nonhormonal pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies. This review provides an update focusing on the latest evidence-based approach for the management of bothersome symptoms of menopause. (Source: Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America)

Evaluating Patient-Reported Outcomes in Cushing ’s Syndrome
The importance of the patient ’s perspective on disease has increasingly gained traction among clinical investigators and clinicians. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are those which pertain to a patient’s health, quality of life, or functional status (associated with health care or treatment) that are reported directly by t he patient, without interpretation by a clinician. In this article, we will review PROs as they relate to the signs, symptoms, health-related quality of life, and comorbidities of active Cushing’s syndrome (CS), and CS after treatment with surgery, radiotherapy, and medical therapy. We will explo...

Evaluating the Impact of Acromegaly on Quality of Life
Acromegaly has a substantial negative impact on quality of life (QoL). This review aims to discuss the impact of acromegaly on QoL from the clinical perspective as well as from the patient perspective. Furthermore, it aims to evaluate the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in acromegaly and how PROMs aid decision-making. The recommendations presented in this review are based on recent clinical evidence on the impact of acromegaly on QoL combined with the authors ’ own clinical experience treating patients with acromegaly. We recommend that a patient-centered approach should be considered in treatment decisi...

Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes for Assessing Diabetes Outcomes
The treatment of diabetes can be complex and overwhelming for patients as it demands persistent attention to lifestyle management, adherence to medications, monitoring of side effects of drugs, and management of devices for glucose monitoring and/or insulin infusion. Therefore, understanding patient-reported outcomes (PROs) that provide direct insight into the patient ’s experience with diabetes is crucial for optimizing diabetes management. This review provides an overview of commonly used PRO questionnaires that assess different aspects of diabetes management. Quality of Life in Patients with Adrenal Insufficiency
Patients with adrenal insufficiency, despite standard glucocorticoid replacement therapy, continue to experience and report impaired self-perceived health status and quality of life. In this review, we will describe quality of life in this patient population, and summarize the determinants of quality of life, based on previous survey-based studies and clinical trials. In addition, some new emerging data during the still ongoing coronavirus disease pandemic are also reviewed in the present article. (Source: Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America)

Symptoms of Late-Onset Hypogonadism in Men
A small percentage of older men are hypogonadal for no apparent reason other than age, a condition called late-onset hypogonadism. This condition is accompanied by symptoms, especially sexual symptoms, most notably decreased libido. Testosterone treatment of men who have late-onset hypogonadism improves all aspects of sexual function and also mood, depressive symptoms, and self-reported walking ability. Testosterone treatment would not be expected to improve similar symptoms in men who are not unequivocally hypogonadal. (Source: Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America)
