Facile synthesis of manganese-hafnium nanocomposites for multimodal MRI/CT imaging and in vitro photodynamic therapy of colon cancer
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 6;237:113834. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113834. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrecise diagnosis of complex and soft tumors is challenging, which limits appropriate treatment options to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes. However, multifunctional nano-sized contrast enhancement agents based on nanoparticles improve the diagnosis accuracy of various diseases such as cancer. Herein, a facile manganese-hafnium nanocomposites (Mn3O4-HfO2 NCs) system was designed for bimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/computed tomography (CT) contrast enhancement with a complimentary function of...

Calcium-based MOFs as scaffolds for shielding immobilized lipase and enhancing its stability
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 9;237:113836. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113836. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe enzyme immobilization technology has become a key tool in the field of enzyme applications; however, improving the activity recovery and stability of the immobilized enzymes is still challenging. Herein, we employed a magnetic carboxymethyl cellulose (MCMC) nanocomposite modified with ionic liquids (ILs) for covalent immobilization of lipase, and used Ca-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the support skeleton and protective layer for immobilized enzymes. The ILs contained long side chains (eigh...

Glycerol- and diglycerol-based polyesters: Evaluation of backbone alterations upon nano-formulation performance
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Feb 28;236:113828. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the success of polyethylene glycol-based (PEGylated) polyesters in the drug delivery and biomedical fields, concerns have arisen regarding PEG's immunogenicity and limited biodegradability. In addition, inherent limitations, including limited chemical handles as well as highly hydrophobic nature, can restrict their effectiveness in physiological conditions of the polyester counterpart. To address these matters, an increasing amount of research has been focused towards identifying alternatives to...

The investigation on sialic acid-modified pectin nanoparticles loaded with oxymatrine for orally targeting and inhibiting the of ulcerative colitis
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Feb 23;236:113809. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113809. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to develop an oral targeting drug delivery system (OTDDS) of oxymatrine (OMT) to effectively treat ulcerative colitis (UC). The OTDDS of OMT (OMT/SA-NPs) was constructed with OMT, pectin, Ca2+, chitosan (CS) and sialic acid (SA). The obtained particles were characterized in terms of particle size, zeta potential, morphology, drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, drug release and stability. The average size of OMT/SA-NPs was 255.0 nm with a zeta potential of -12.4 mV. The loadi...

Understanding the petal effect: Wetting properties and surface structure of natural rose petals and rose petal-derived surfaces
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 4;236:113832. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113832. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe petal effect is identified as a non-wetting state with high drop adhesion. The wetting behavior of petal surfaces is attributed to the papillose structure of their epidermis, which leads to a Cassie-Baxter regime combined with strong pinning sites. Under this scenario, sessile drops are pearl shaped and, unlike lotus-like surfaces, firmly attached to the surface. Petal surfaces are used as inspiration for the fabrication of functional parahydrophobic surfaces such as antibacterial or water-harvesting...

Novel silver nanoparticle-antibiotic combinations as promising antibacterial and anti-biofilm candidates against multiple-antibiotic resistant ESKAPE microorganisms
This study explores the combination of AgNPs with antibiotics (SACs) to create new antimicrobial agents effective against MAR ESKAPE microorganisms.METHODS: AgNPs were synthesized using Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619 and characterized for structure and surface properties. The SACs were tested against ESKAPE microorganisms using growth kinetics and time-kill curve methods. The effect of SACs on bacterial biofilms and the disruption of cell membranes was determined. The in-vitro cytotoxicity effect of the AgNPs was also studied.FINDINGS: The synthesized AgNPs (spherical, 7.37±4.55 nm diameter) were antimicrobial agains...
