In vitro corrosion and cytocompatibility of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys coated with FHA
This study aims to improve the degradation behavior of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys by electrodepositing fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA). We investigated the microstructure and bond strength of the deposition, as well as degradation and cellular reactions. After 15-30 days of degradation in Hanks solution, FHA deposited alloys showed enhanced stability and less pH change. The strong interfacial bond between FHA and the Mg-Zn-Ca substrate was verified through scratch tests (Critical loads: 10.73 ± 0.014 N in Mg-Zn-0.5Ca alloys). Cellular studies demonstrated that FHA-coated alloys exhibited good cytocompatibility and promoted the growth of ...

Dual targetable drug delivery system based on cell membrane camouflaged liposome for enhanced tumor targeting and improved anti-tumor efficiency
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Apr 3;238:113892. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113892. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTReceptor and ligand binding mediated targeted drug delivery systems (DDS) sometimes fail to target to tumor sites, and cancer cell membrane (CCM) coating can overcome the dilemma of immune clearance and nonspecific binding of DDS in vivo. In order to enhance the targeting ability and improve the anti-tumor effect, a dual targeting DDS was established based on U87MG CCM mediated homologous targeting and cyclic peptide RGD mediated active targeting. The DDS was prepared by coating RGD doped CCM onto doxoru...

In-situ growth of CeO < sub > 2 < /sub > on biofilms: Innovative nanoparticles for photothermal therapy & amp; multi-pronged attack on Alzheimer's disease
This study pioneered the in situ growth of cerium oxide nanoparticles on macrophage membranes (Ce-RAW). Further, carbon quantum dots (CQD) were biomimetically modified by Ce-RAW, leading to the synthesis of a multifunctional nanocomposite (CQD-Ce-RAW). Within the framework of this research, CQD-Ce-RAW was strategically combined with photothermal therapy (PTT), aiming to achieve a more significant therapeutic effect. The macrophage membrane confers the system with anti-phagocytic and anti-inflammatory biological functions. More importantly, the ultra-small size of cerium oxide grown on the membrane acts as a reactive oxygen...

Formation mechanism of a novel core-shell with tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium-modified montmorillonite interlayer nanofibrous membrane and its antimicrobial properties
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 31;238:113889. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113889. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel core-shell with a tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride-modified montmorillonite (TDMBA/MMT) interlayer silk fibroin (SF)/poly(lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibrous membrane was fabricated using a simple conventional electrospinning method. Scanning electron microscopy and pore size analyses revealed that this core-shell with TDMBA/MMT interlayer maintained its nanofibrous morphology and larger pore structure more successfully than SF/PLLA nanofibrous membranes after treatment with 75% ethanol ...

Light-triggered AND logic tetrapeptide dynamic covalent assembly
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Apr 1;238:113885. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113885. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe demonstrate light-triggered dynamic covalent assembly of a linear short tetrapeptide containing two terminal cysteine residues in an AND logic manner. A photobase generator is introduced to accomplish light-mediated pH regulation to increase the reduction potential of thiols in the tetrapeptide, which activates its oxidative polymerization through disulfide bonds. Interestingly, it is elucidated that under light irradiation, mere co-existence of photobase generator and the oxidizing agent permits the ...

Mucoadhesive phenylboronic acid-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels containing glutathione for treatment of corneal epithelial cells exposed to benzalkonium chloride
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 29;238:113884. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113884. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBenzalkonium chloride (BAK) is the most commonly-used preservative in topical ophthalmic medications that may cause ocular surface inflammation associated with oxidative stress and dry eye syndrome. Glutathione (GSH) is an antioxidant in human tears and able to decrease the proinflammatory cytokine release from cells and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a hydrophilic polymer, is one of most commonly used artificial tears and can promote the corneal epithelial cell ...

Hybrid nanostructures of nitrogen-doped carbon dots and aromatic amino acids: Synthesis, interactions at interfaces and optical properties
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Mar 30;238:113878. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113878. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) were synthesized using a simple and fast hydrothermal route, employing citric acid and urea as precursors. The resulting NCDs were non-covalently functionalized (conjugated) with aromatic amino acids, namely phenylalanine (Phe) and tryptophan (Trp). Atomic force microscopy revealed that the NCDs exhibit a disk-like morphology with an average diameter of approximately 60 nm and an average height of about 0.5 nm. Following conjugation, the particle height increased to arou...
