Delayed cortical thinning in children and adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure
CONCLUSIONS: Regional differences were seen longitudinally in the trajectory and timing of CT change in those with PAE, suggesting delayed cortical maturation and an atypical pattern of development compared to typically developing individuals. In addition, exploratory correlations analyses of SPC and EF performance suggest atypical brain-behavior relationships in PAE. The findings highlight the potential role of altered developmental timing of cortical maturation in contributing to long-term functional impairment in PAE.PMID:37132064 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15096 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Direct and indirect effects of alcohol and its toxic metabolite acetaldehyde on human esophageal myofibroblasts and epithelial cells
CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol and acetaldehyde doses in which the majority of HEMFs and epithelial cells are healthy, elicit production of paracrine mediators with pro-proliferative effects on neighboring cells. Understanding the effect of alcohol and acetaldehyde on HEMFs and HEMF-epithelial interactions may help identify the molecular basis by which alcohol increases risk for esophageal cancer.PMID:37128647 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15093 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

G protein-coupled receptor 158 modulates sensitivity to the sedative-hypnotic effect of ethanol in male mice
CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a critical role of neuronal GPR158 in shaping sensitivity to the sedative-hypnotic effect of ethanol, suggesting that GPR158 may be a potential target for treating alcohol use disorder.PMID:37128649 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15094 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Longitudinal examination of high-risk drinking contexts: Daytime drinking, pregaming, and drinking games linked to high-risk alcohol use and negative consequences in young adults
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that daytime drinking, pregaming, and playing drinking games are high-risk contexts in terms of month-to-month and long-term risks. Additional research is needed on the various contexts in which young adults drink alcohol and the extent to which contextual factors interact with one another to amplify/reduce risks and harms.PMID:37128660 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15095 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Evidence for an alcohol-related "harm paradox" in individuals with internalizing disorders: Test and replication in two independent community samples
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with INTD experience more alcohol-related symptoms than those who drink at the same level. While considering other explanations, we argue that this "harm paradox" is best explained by the view that INTD confers a neurobiologically mediated susceptibility to the development of AUD symptoms.PMID:37115410 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15036 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

The event-based influence of incentivizing and physical contexts on daily alcohol initiation and consumption
CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the importance of studying event-specific predictors of drinking decisions and the complex association between context/location and the type of drinking decision or outcome.PMID:37103791 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15027 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

The characteristics and treatment outcomes of people with very late onset of problem drinking
CONCLUSION: People who first experience problems with alcohol after the age of 60 may have better mental health functioning than people with an earlier age of problem drinking. The results suggest that the age of onset of problem drinking may be a poor predictor of alcohol use severity and treatment outcomes and older adults can benefit from alcohol treatment irrespective of the age problem drinking began.PMID:37093459 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15029 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Alcohol, place conditioning, and male rats: A systematic review for outcome prediction
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend settings for CPP induction in short protocols, indicate the predictive analysis has broad consequences (from theoretical to translational ones) for PC in alcohol research, and specify variables needing more accurate investigation (rat sex, age, weight, strain, spatial configuration of the apparatus, and conditioning timetable). This review may improve our comprehension of results of alcohol-induced PC with rats, refining our understanding of the motivator function of alcohol and the alcohol-seeking behavior triggered by environmental contexts, and opening new research venues on their neurobiologic...

Trends in Alcohol-Impaired Crashes in California, 2016 to 2021: A Time Series Analysis for Alcohol Involvement and Crash Distribution Among Demographic Subgroups
CONCLUSIONS: The initiation of a COVID-19 stay-at-home ordinance in California was associated with a substantial decrease in overall crash rates. While crashes have returned to pre-pandemic levels, alcohol-involved crashes remain elevated. The initiation of the stay-at-home order significantly increased alcohol-impaired driving that then remained elevated.PMID:37095075 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15091 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)
