Phosphatidylethanol and self-reported alcohol consumption among people living with HIV in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam
CONCLUSIONS: Although PEth values and self-reported alcohol use were correlated, the observed associations were modest. Additional research into the dynamics of PEth production and elimination is warranted across diverse populations to better understand how PEth assessments can be best integrated into research and clinical care.PMID:37069122 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15084 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Prenatal alcohol exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder independently predict greater substance use in young adulthood
CONCLUSIONS: Thus, the effects of PAE on alcohol and cannabis use in young adulthood is not attributable to being reared in an environment that is socioeconomically disadvantaged or in one in which there is extensive maternal drinking. Furthermore, PAE was related to enhanced alcohol tolerance in young adults, a risk factor for alcohol use disorder later in life. Although ADHD was associated with greater alcohol consumption in early adulthood, it did not mediate the effect of PAE on offspring alcohol use.PMID:37042023 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15076 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

A critical review of effects on ethanol intake of the dynorphin/kappa opioid receptor system in the extended amygdala: From inhibition to stimulation
Alcohol Clin Exp Res. 2023 Apr 11. doi: 10.1111/acer.15078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe dynorphin (DYN) / kappa opioid receptor (KOR) system has increasingly been investigated as a possible pharmacotherapeutic target for the treatment of alcohol use disorder, but findings on the direction of its effects have been mixed. Activation of KORs by DYN has been shown to be able to elicit dysphoric effects, and while the DYN/KOR system has canonically been considered particularly important in driving intake though negative reinforcement in dependent states, this review highlights that its activity may also oppose the positiv...

Desire and craving  measured using behavioral ratings and brain network topology differ significantly among moderate to heavy alcohol consumers
CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that the difference between ratings of craving for alcohol and desire for alcohol is not trivial. The different ratings and their association with alcohol consumption or abstinence experiences may have significant biological and clinical implications.PMID:36997344 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15066 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)
