Rate-dependent effects of narrative interventions in a longitudinal study of individuals who use alcohol
CONCLUSION: The evidence of a rate-dependent effect of EFT on delay discounting rates offers a more nuanced, mechanistic understanding of this novel therapeutic intervention and can allow more precise treatment targeting by demonstrating who is likely to receive the most benefit from it.PMID:36810763 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15020 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Effects of topiramate therapy on serum bicarbonate concentration in a sample of 10,279 veterans
CONCLUSIONS: The excess prevalence of metabolic acidosis associated with topiramate treatment does not differ with dosage, alcohol consumption, or the presence of an AUD. Baseline and periodic serum bicarbonate concentration measurements are recommended during topiramate therapy. Patients prescribed topiramate should be educated about the symptoms of metabolic acidosis and urged to report their occurrence promptly to a healthcare provider.PMID:36810985 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15011 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

An investigation of the utility of the Australian Guide to the diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in young children
CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the complexity of presentation and the extent of impairment in the sample. The use of comorbid diagnoses to substantiate a "severe" designation in specific neurodevelopmental domains raises the question of whether there were false-positive diagnoses. The complexity of determining causal relationships between exposure to PAE and early life adversity on developmental outcomes continues to be a challenge in this young population.PMID:36810987 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15012 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

The role of effortful control in mitigating negative consequences associated with emerging adult drinking
CONCLUSIONS: The results provide some evidence that very high levels of attentional and activation control protect against alcohol-related negative consequences associated with drinking. Emerging adults who are very high in attentional and activation control are likely better able to control their attention and engage in goal-directed behavior, like leaving a party at a reasonable hour, or attending school and/or work when experiencing the punishing effects of a hangover. Results emphasize the importance of distinguishing facets of self-regulation when testing self-regulation models.PMID:36811151 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15016 (...

Sleep disturbances in Norwegian children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) with and without a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or epilepsy
CONCLUSION: Problems with sleep are very common in FASD children and seem independent of FASD subgroup and the presence of epilepsy or a pathological EEG finding, while those with ADHD had more sleep problems. The study underscores the importance of screening for sleep disturbances in all children with FASD as these problems may be treatable.PMID:36811179 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15009 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Validation of the quantification of phosphatidylethanol 16:0/18:1 concentrations in TASSO-M20 devices
CONCLUSIONS: Our data support the utility, accuracy, and feasibility of using the TASSO-M20 device for blood self-collection during a virtual study. The TASSO-M20 device had multiple advantages over the typical finger stick method, including consistent blood collection, participant acceptability, and less discomfort as indicated by acceptability interviews.PMID:36811188 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15024 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Adverse childhood experiences in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and their effects on behavior
This study describes ACEs in children with FASD and how they impact behavior problems.METHODS: A convenience sample of 87 caregivers of children (aged 3 to 12) with FASD participating in an intervention study reported on their children's ACEs using the ACEs Questionnaire and behavior problems on the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI). A theorized three-factor structure of the ECBI (Oppositional Behavior, Attention Problems, and Conduct Problems) was investigated. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlations and linear regression.RESULTS: On average, caregivers endorsed 3.10 (SD = 2.99) ACEs experienced by their childr...

Cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses of a web-based computer-tailored intervention for prevention of binge drinking among Spanish adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: Computer-tailored feedback is a cost-effective way to reduce BD and increase QALYs among adolescents. However, long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate more fully changes in both BD and health-related quality of life.PMID:36811462 | DOI:10.1111/acer.14990 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Interleukin-22 alleviates alcohol-associated hepatic fibrosis, inhibits autophagy, and suppresses the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in mice
CONCLUSIONS: IL-22 exerts a marked protective effect against alcohol-associated hepatic fibrosis. Its effect may be partly related to the alteration of autophagy-related gene expression and inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in the liver.PMID:36799106 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15021 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Indomethacin restores loss of hippocampal neurogenesis and cholinergic innervation and reduces innate immune expression and reversal learning deficits in adult male and female rats following adolescent ethanol exposure
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that in males and females, (1) AIE persistent neuroimmune induction mediates both the loss of adult hippocampal DCX and loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons and their innervation to hippocampal targets, and (2) anti-inflammatory indomethacin treatment following AIE that restores these persistent molecular pathologies also restores spatial reversal learning deficits.PMID:36799290 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15019 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Impact of alcohol use disorder severity on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral suppression and CD4 count in three international cohorts of people with HIV

Latent classes of neurodevelopmental profiles and needs in children and adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure
CONCLUSIONS: Four relatively distinct subgroups were present in a large heterogeneous sample of children and adolescents with PAE assessed for FASD in Canada. These findings may inform clinical services by guiding clinicians to identify distinct service pathways for these subgroups, potentially increasing access to a more personalized treatment approach and improving outcomes.PMID:36799306 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15028 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)
