The characteristics and treatment outcomes of people with very late onset of problem drinking
CONCLUSION: People who first experience problems with alcohol after the age of 60 may have better mental health functioning than people with an earlier age of problem drinking. The results suggest that the age of onset of problem drinking may be a poor predictor of alcohol use severity and treatment outcomes and older adults can benefit from alcohol treatment irrespective of the age problem drinking began.PMID:37093459 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15029 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Alcohol, place conditioning, and male rats: A systematic review for outcome prediction
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend settings for CPP induction in short protocols, indicate the predictive analysis has broad consequences (from theoretical to translational ones) for PC in alcohol research, and specify variables needing more accurate investigation (rat sex, age, weight, strain, spatial configuration of the apparatus, and conditioning timetable). This review may improve our comprehension of results of alcohol-induced PC with rats, refining our understanding of the motivator function of alcohol and the alcohol-seeking behavior triggered by environmental contexts, and opening new research venues on their neurobiologic...

The role of culture in the association between racial discrimination and alcohol use among North American Indigenous adolescents reporting recent drinking
CONCLUSIONS: Findings speak to the need to reduce racial discrimination against NAI youth, and to consider youths' different needs based on level of cultural affiliation to reduce subsequent alcohol consumption.PMID:37095073 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15088 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Trends in Alcohol-Impaired Crashes in California, 2016 to 2021: A Time Series Analysis for Alcohol Involvement and Crash Distribution Among Demographic Subgroups
CONCLUSIONS: The initiation of a COVID-19 stay-at-home ordinance in California was associated with a substantial decrease in overall crash rates. While crashes have returned to pre-pandemic levels, alcohol-involved crashes remain elevated. The initiation of the stay-at-home order significantly increased alcohol-impaired driving that then remained elevated.PMID:37095075 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15091 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Effective alcohol policies are associated with reduced consumption among demographic groups who drink heavily
CONCLUSIONS: The IAC Policy Index, reflecting four effective policies, was associated with volume and frequency of drinking across 10 diverse countries. Each increase in the IAC Policy Index was associated with lower typical quantities consumed among groups reporting heavy drinking: young adults and less well-educated. There is value in implementing such alcohol policies and a need to accelerate their uptake globally.PMID:37087719 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15030 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Development and validation of the C-SHADE Scale for measuring perpetration of common sexually harassing and aggressive behaviors in drinking environments
CONCLUSIONS: The C-SHADE is suitable for measuring prevalence and evaluating interventions in drinking settings. The C-SHADE confirmed high prevalence of SA in drinking settings and identified an important group of C-SHADE-only perpetrators for whom interventions that focus on situational precipitators of SA in drinking settings may be especially useful.PMID:37081744 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15087 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

The influence of cognitive and affective components of the sentinel event on alcohol use following a brief intervention with trauma patients
CONCLUSION: These results provide preliminary support for further consideration of an affective component of alcohol-related injuries that may motivate subsequent reductions in drinking following a sentinel event.PMID:37076240 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15083 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Blunted neural reward response to alcohol and greater alcohol motivation in binge drinkers in a randomized clinical experiment
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that alcohol-related OFC tolerance plays a significant role in sustained alcohol motivation, and that both specific alcohol-related neural reward tolerance and pre-motor sensitization responses may contribute to escalating alcohol motivation to drive excessive alcohol intake, even prior to development of alcohol use disorders.PMID:37070596 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15082 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)
