Symptomatic and preventive medication use according to age and frailty in Australian and Japanese nursing homes
CONCLUSIONS: The ratio of symptomatic to preventive medications was higher with increasing frailty but lower with age in Australia; whereas in Japan, the ratio remained consistent across age and frailty groups. Preventive medications remained prevalent in most-frail residents in both cohorts, albeit at lower levels in Japan.PMID:37934399 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02600-x (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Effects of a tailored mat-Pilates exercise program for older adults on pain, functioning, and balance in women with chronic non-specific low back pain: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: A 10-week mat-Pilates program reduced pain and improved disability in older women with chronic NSLBP, effects which persisted at 6 months. However, no impact on balance, analgesic use, or exercise adherence was observed.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER/DATE OF REGISTRATION: NCT04752579/February 12, 2021.PMID:37934400 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02604-7 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

The relationship between the quantity and type of macronutrients in diet and frailty in older outpatients
CONCLUSION: This study found that frailty was associated with less than 1.2 g/kg/day protein consumption, lower fiber, and PUFA consumption.PMID:37930590 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02599-1 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

The importance of prognosis in geriatric patients attending the emergency department: a comparison between two common short geriatric assessment tools
CONCLUSIONS: Brief MPI and CFS showed a good accuracy/precision to predict mortality in older patients attending the ED. Considering that they are quick to perform, their introduction in ED clinical practice could be extremely helpful.PMID:37932645 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02603-8 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Genetic predisposition to white blood cells in relation to the risk of frailty
CONCLUSIONS: According to this MR study, higher eosinophil counts are related to an increased risk of frailty. To validate these findings and investigate the mechanisms underlying these connections, future studies are warranted.PMID:37923935 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02609-2 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Osteoporosis and major fragility fractures (MOF) in sarcoidosis patients: association with disease severity
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that MOF represent a common and important complication in patients with moderate/severe sarcoidosis. The chest X-ray evaluation and the pulmonary function test could allow to define the risk of MOF in sarcoidosis patients.PMID:37924469 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02589-3 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Overweight in elderly increases postural instability during sit-to-stand test: a Kinect-based assessment
CONCLUSION: Overweight elderly individuals had poorer balance than their normal weight counterparts when using Kinect camera. The researchers suggest that Kinect device can be a cost-effective alternative to measure balance performance among overweight elderly in the community-based setting.PMID:37921905 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02606-5 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Assessment of risk factors associated with long-term mortality in nursing homes: result from the SENIOR cohort
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights that certain modifiable factors related to physical or mental health contribute to increased survival in nursing homes. Because of its ability to improve physical performance and partly cognitive function, promoting physical activity in nursing homes appears to be a public health priority.PMID:37917376 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02579-5 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
