Acetyl-cholinesterase-inhibitors reconsidered. A narrative review of post-marketing studies on Alzheimer's disease
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Feb 7;36(1):23. doi: 10.1007/s40520-023-02675-6.ABSTRACTThe real efficacy of Acetyl-cholinesterase-inhibitors (AChEI) has been questioned. In this narrative review we evaluated their effect on cognitive decline, measured by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and on total mortality rates in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) recruited into post-marketing open/non-randomized/retrospective studies. In AD patients treated with AChEI, the mean MMSE loss ranged from 0.2 to 1.37 points/years, compared with 1.07-3.4 points/years in non-treated patients. Six studies also reported data about survival;...

Predictors of hospital readmission rate in geriatric patients
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of performing an accurate CGA, since defined domains and variables contained in the CGA (i.e., LOS, lower albumin and systolic blood pressure, poor renal function, and greater comorbidity burden), when combined altogether, may offer a valid tool to identify the most fragile patients with clinical and functional impairment enhancing their risk of unplanned early and late readmission.PMID:38321332 | PMC:PMC10847193 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02664-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Knowledge mapping of trends and hotspots in the field of exercise and cognition research over the past decade
This study aims to address this gap and map the research landscape regarding the role of exercise in cognitive function enhancement. Firstly, the frequencies and co-occurrence of keywords were analysed to identify six main clusters: aging, cognitive impairment, rehabilitation, obesity, fatigue, and hippocampus. Secondly, reference timeline co-citation analysis revealed that hippocampus and aging were the major bursts with high intensity and long attention span while children had recently emerged as a topical subject. Finally, the evolution of themes from 2012 to 2022 was analysed, and found that older adults had been the l...

General self-efficacy, not musculoskeletal health, was associated with social isolation and loneliness in older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: No musculoskeletal condition was associated with increased social isolation or loneliness, but longitudinal studies in larger samples are required. Greater self-efficacy was associated with reduced social isolation and reduced loneliness. Interventions promoting self-efficacy in older adults may reduce isolation and loneliness in this age group.PMID:38308733 | PMC:PMC10838234 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02676-5 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Telecoaching as a new training method for elderly people: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: TC seems to be a safe, effective, and injury-free training method, despite its limited application in elderly population. Future studies should better investigate this training method in elderly people in order to evaluate the effectiveness in a wider range of diseases.PMID:38305822 | PMC:PMC10837264 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02648-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association of preoperative frailty with the risk of postoperative delirium in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Preoperative frailty increased the risk of POD in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.DISCUSSION: Preoperative assessment of frailty in geriatric hip surgery can timely identify potential risks and provide interventions targeting frailty factors to reduce the incidence of POD in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. The findings suggested that preoperative frailty could increase the risk of POD in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. Further research is necessary to determine whether perioperative interventions aimed at enhancing frailty can mitigate the risk of POD and improve p...

Optimal assessment of the glomerular filtration rate in older chinese patients using the equations of the Berlin Initiative Study
CONCLUSIONS: Although no equation was fully accurate in the mGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 subgroup, the BIScr-cys (of the eight equations) assessed the eGFRs of the entire population best. A new equation is urgently required for older Chinese and even East Asians, especially those with moderate-to-severe renal insufficiency.PMID:38294586 | PMC:PMC10830815 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02657-8 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Physical activity trajectories and their associations with health outcomes in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or dementia: a national cohort study
This study adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting.RESULTS: Three distinct PA trajectories were identified: high-decreasing and rebound class (9.34%), moderate-decreasing class (10.31%), and low-increasing class (80.34%). The logistic regression showed that age, sex, education level, body mass index, residence, depressive symptoms, mobility activities of daily life score, frequency of social activities score were PA predictors. Adjusting for sociodemographic variables, only the high-decreasing and rebound class remained significantly associated with worse self-rated health.DISCUSSION: This study revealed three PA tra...

Normalized stability time analysis within the boundaries between adults with and without fear of falling
CONCLUSION: The study highlights the need to account for both COP boundaries and visual conditions in adults with FOF. When assessing postural control during unilateral stances, clinicians must also give attention to non-visual cues.PMID:38281190 | PMC:PMC10822799 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02651-0 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Development and validation of prediction model for older adults with cognitive frailty
CONCLUSION: The study could provide a practical tool to identify older adults with a high risk of CF early. Furthermore, targeting modifiable factors could prevent about half of the new-onset CF during a 6-year follow-up.PMID:38281238 | PMC:PMC10822804 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02647-w (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association between accelerometry measured patterns of sedentary behaviors and functional status in older adults
CONCLUSIONS: Greater fragmentation of SB was associated with better function, and increasing SBF may be a useful strategy for mitigating the effects of SB in older adults, but prospective research is needed to support this approach.PMID:38281264 | PMC:PMC10822805 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02644-z (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
