The Mediterranean diet: a historical perspective
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Mar 23;36(1):78. doi: 10.1007/s40520-023-02686-3.ABSTRACTThe Mediterranean diet, which was born in the Mediterranean basin, was initially quite poor and simple, essentially based on the products that grew almost spontaneously along the shores of the Mediterranean, i.e., olives, grapes, and wheat, which were long cultivated in the Mediterranean region. The invasions of the Roman Empire by barbarian populations, between 400 and 800 AD, made the diet enriched with products from wild uncultivated areas, meat from game and pigs, and vegetables. Body composition, balance, functional capacity and falls in older women
CONCLUSION: For postmenopausal women with higher femoral neck BMD appear to sustain more falls, but have a lower risk of severe fall injuries. Better TUG and single leg standing time predict lower risk of falls and fall injuries.PMID:38512411 | PMC:PMC10957703 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02719-5 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Role of fermented dairy products in the health benefits of a mediterranean diet
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Mar 19;36(1):75. doi: 10.1007/s40520-024-02721-x.ABSTRACTMediterranean diet includes fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese. These foods provide calcium, phosphorus, fat, carbohydrates and protein, all nutrients influencing various systems including bone, cardiovascular system, intermediary metabolism, cancer, central nervous system, and inflammation. In addition, they contain prebiotics and provide probiotics which are capable of modifiying microbiota composition and metabolism, potentially acting also indirectly on the various systems. A large body of evidence indicates that fermented da...

Association of Mediterranean diet adherence with disease progression, quality of life and physical activity, sociodemographic and anthropometric parameters, and serum biomarkers in community-dwelling older adults with multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: MD may exert beneficial effects in older adults with MS. Future strategies and policies are highly recommended to inform both the general population and the older patients with MS for the beneficial effects of MD in preventing MS and in improving or even slowing down the disease progression and symptoms severity of MS.PMID:38492093 | PMC:PMC10944396 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02712-y (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Nomogram predicting the efficacy of transurethral surgery in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients
CONCLUSION: The nomogram we developed included age, the compliance of the bladder, the function of the detrusor, and the severity of bladder outlet obstruction. The discrimination and calibration of the nomogram were confirmed by internal and external validation.PMID:38485798 | PMC:PMC10940401 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02708-8 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
