Comparative efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation for post-stroke cognitive impairment: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Among various NIBS techniques, HF-rTMS stands out as the most promising intervention for enhancing cognitive function. Meanwhile, Dual-rTMS is highly recommended for improving ADL capacity.PMID:38345751 | PMC:PMC10861650 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02662-x (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Evaluating adherence, tolerability and safety of oral calcium citrate in elderly osteopenic subjects: a real-life non-interventional, prospective, multicenter study
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated favorable adherence to calcium citrate supplementation in elderly osteopenic subjects. The occurrence of ARs, though generally mild, were associated with lower adherence to calcium supplementation.PMID:38345765 | PMC:PMC10861607 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02696-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association of organ damage with predicted fat mass in a community-dwelling elderly: the Northern Shanghai study
CONCLUSIONS: Among various organ damage, elevated FM is significantly and independently associated with arterial stiffening and LVH in the elderly. Compared with men, women with increased FM are more likely to have multiple organ damage.PMID:38345775 | PMC:PMC10861618 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02658-7 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

The link between spirituality and longevity
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Feb 11;36(1):32. doi: 10.1007/s40520-023-02684-5.ABSTRACTWe are facing an inverted demographic pyramid with continuously growing aged populations around the world. However, the advances that prolong physical life not always contemplate its psychological and social dimensions. Longevity is a complex outcome influenced by a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, access to healthcare, socio-economic conditions, and other environmental factors. These factors have been generally considered in the compelling research that seeks the determinants of longevity, particularly those conc...

Longitudinal changes of the femoral bone mineral density from first to third trimester of pregnancy: bone health assessment by means of non-ionizing REMS technology
CONCLUSIONS: Our study conducted on a cohort of healthy participants with uncomplicated pregnancy demonstrates that there is a significant reduction of bone mineral density at femoral neck from early to late gestation.PMID:38334854 | PMC:PMC10858072 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02677-4 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Analysis of intestinal flora and cognitive function in maintenance hemodialysis patients using combined 16S ribosome DNA and shotgun metagenome sequencing
CONCLUSION: Among the microbiota, Roseburia may be important in MHD patients. We demonstrated a correlation between bacterial genera and cognitive function, and propose possible mechanisms.PMID:38334873 | PMC:PMC10857965 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02645-y (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Quality of life, household income, and dietary habits are associated with the risk of sarcopenia among the Chinese elderly
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our findings demonstrate that low levels of HRQoL and household income, more intake of salt and spicy food, and occasional intake of alcohol are correlated with higher risk of sarcopenia, while skipping breakfast occasionally is associated with lower risk of sarcopenia in a Chinese population of older adults.PMID:38334908 | PMC:PMC10857955 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02656-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Trends in disability in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living among Chinese older adults from 2011 to 2018
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of IADL and ADL disability among Chinese older adults increased over time. The "arthritis/digestive diseases" pattern, "cardiometabolic disease" pattern and "high multimorbidity" pattern appeared to be less disabling in ADL over time. Improving the prevention and treatment of multimorbidity and developing age-friendly living conditions could be helpful to reduce the risks of disability.PMID:38326510 | PMC:PMC10850014 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02690-7 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association between inflammatory bowel disease and frailty: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: Our research indicates that IBD, encompassing both CD and UC, may augment the propensity for frailty. Clinical practitioners must prioritize early frailty assessment in individuals afflicted with inflammatory bowel disease, inclusive of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, facilitating proactive measures and timely interventions. However, our findings do not provide evidence supporting a causal effect of frailty on IBD (including CD and UC). Consequently, further studies are essential to explore the intricate mechanisms that clarify the effect of frailty on IBD.PMID:38319411 | PMC:PMC10847216 | DOI:10.1007/...

Age-adjusted visceral adiposity index (VAI) is superior to VAI for predicting mortality among US adults: an analysis of the NHANES 2011-2014
CONCLUSION: Age significantly improves the ability of VAI for predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Age-adjusted VAI is independently associated with mortality risk, and thus could be considered a reliable parameter for assessing mortality risk.PMID:38321181 | PMC:PMC10847207 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02660-z (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Disposition of improving quality of life in older adults: the case of Lithuania
CONCLUSIONS: The overall quality of life rating was lower than the average. Older adults are not sufficiently prepared or educated to make significant changes to develop healthier habits in their quality-of-life improvement, though, they demonstrate concern about their quality of life.PMID:38321230 | PMC:PMC10847182 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02687-2 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Acetyl-cholinesterase-inhibitors reconsidered. A narrative review of post-marketing studies on Alzheimer's disease
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Feb 7;36(1):23. doi: 10.1007/s40520-023-02675-6.ABSTRACTThe real efficacy of Acetyl-cholinesterase-inhibitors (AChEI) has been questioned. In this narrative review we evaluated their effect on cognitive decline, measured by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and on total mortality rates in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) recruited into post-marketing open/non-randomized/retrospective studies. In AD patients treated with AChEI, the mean MMSE loss ranged from 0.2 to 1.37 points/years, compared with 1.07-3.4 points/years in non-treated patients. Six studies also reported data about survival;...

Predictors of hospital readmission rate in geriatric patients
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of performing an accurate CGA, since defined domains and variables contained in the CGA (i.e., LOS, lower albumin and systolic blood pressure, poor renal function, and greater comorbidity burden), when combined altogether, may offer a valid tool to identify the most fragile patients with clinical and functional impairment enhancing their risk of unplanned early and late readmission.PMID:38321332 | PMC:PMC10847193 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02664-9 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
