Medication review and deprescribing in different healthcare settings: a position statement from an Italian scientific consortium
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Mar 8;36(1):63. doi: 10.1007/s40520-023-02679-2.ABSTRACTRecent medical advancements have increased life expectancy, leading to a surge in patients affected by multiple chronic diseases and consequent polypharmacy, especially among older adults. This scenario increases the risk of drug interactions and adverse drug reactions, highlighting the need for medication review and deprescribing to reduce inappropriate medications and optimize therapeutic regimens, with the ultimate goal to improving patients' health and quality of life. This position statement from the Italian Scientific Consortium on medic...

Bile acid profile associated with CSF and PET biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease
CONCLUSION: The findings from our study suggest a correlation between altered profiles of BAs and CSF and imaging biomarkers associated with AD. These results provide supporting evidence for the link between the gut microbiome and the pathological features of AD.PMID:38451317 | PMC:PMC10920417 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02729-3 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Markers for the detection of Lewy body disease versus Alzheimer's disease in mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Few studies have assessed the accuracy of biomarkers and clinical tools to distinguish DLB from AD at the MCI stage. While results are promising for CSF markers, FDG-PET and clinical symptoms scales, more studies, particularly with a prospective design, are needed to evaluate their accuracy and clinical usefulness.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: Prospero (CRD42023422600).PMID:38451331 | PMC:PMC10920203 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02704-y (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Relationship between hemoglobin and grip strength in older adults:  the ActiFE study
CONCLUSIONS: Our data show an association between hemoglobin and grip strength only in women < 80 years old. For men < 80 years, the association was only significant with ferritin levels ≥ 300 µg/L. Considering the decreasing levels of hemoglobin and grip strength and the high prevalence of iron deficiency in older adults further analyses investigating this relationship with more iron specific parameters such as transferrin saturation are warranted.PMID:38451343 | PMC:PMC10920471 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02698-7 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Validity and reliability of a ruler drop test to measure dual-task reaction time, choice reaction time and discrimination reaction time
CONCLUSION: We conclude that the RDT is a suitable instrument for measuring dual-task, choice and discrimination reaction time. Future studies should explore the reliability of these measures in other populations.PMID:38451364 | PMC:PMC10920456 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02726-6 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association between natriuretic peptides and C-reactive protein with frailty in heart failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Frailty in HF is linked to increased concentrations of BNP, NT-proBNP, and CRP, which have been epidemiologically associated with adverse outcomes. The increased risk of NYHA III/IV classification further emphasizes the clinical impact of frailty in this population.PMID:38446241 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02713-x (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)
