Itch in Psoriasis: A New Look at Well-known Subject.
This study investigated the prevalence and detailed clinical characteristics of chronic itch in 143 psoriatic patients, with regard to different age groups, comorbidities and pharmacotherapy. Chronic itch was reported by 72% of subjects. Patients aged 65 years and over presented higher 4-Item Itch Questionnaire (4IIQ) scores (8.6 ± 3.4 vs. 7.4 ± 2.5 points; p = 0.03) and rarely experienced itching at midday (p = 0.009). Chronic itch correlated with aspirin intake and xerosis intensity. 4IIQ scores were higher in patients with asthma/chronic obstructive p...

Strong Associations Between Inflammation, Pruritus and Mental Health in Dialysis Patients.
Abstract Pruritus, impaired mental health and inflammation contribute to morbidity in end-stage renal disease. There are no studies on all three conditions. We therefore obtained inflammatory parameter data (C-reactive protein and interleukin-6), pruritus data and psychological test data (36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, "Allgemeine Depressionsskala" and Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20) for 19 dialysis patients with pruritus, 20 dialysis patients without pruritus and 15 healthy controls. Non-parametric hierarchical clustering revealed three clusters of parameters: one mainly driven by pruritus scores (chro...

Psoriasis Incidence and Lifetime Prevalence: Suggestion for a Higher Mortality Rate in Older Age-classes among Psoriatic Patients Compared to the General Population in Italy.
Abstract Data on the psoriasis incidence and prevalence in the Italian population are limited, and a timely and accurate understanding of the disease epidemiology is needed. This ad hoc study investigated psoriasis incidence and a lifetime prevalence in a representative sample (n = 14,705) of the Italian population. Information on lifetime history of skin disorders with details about their onset, duration, and treatment was collected. Psoriasis incidence showed a bimodal distribution pattern, with peaks in age classes, characteristic of early-onset (35-44 years) and late-onset (65-74 years) psoriasis...

Patients were randomized to receive either first oral aprepitant 80 mg/day or placebo for 4 weeks. Following a 2-week wash-out phase, the patients were crossed-over to receive the other treatment for 4 weeks. Primary efficacy criterion was the intra-individual difference between mean itch intensity (visual analogue scale) at baseline compared wit...

Overall skin response rate was 96.2% (92.9% middle-dose and 100% low-dose; not significant (NS)). Overall complete and partial skin response rates were 57.7% (42.9% middle-dose and 75% low-dose; NS) and 38.5% (50% middle-dose and 25% low-dose; NS) respectively. Modifiable Risk-factors for Keratinocyte Cancers in Australia: A Case-control Study.
Abstract Keratinocyte cancer (KC) is the most common malignancy in Caucasians. The incidence of KC has increased over the past 40 years. This case-control study investigated the environmental and host risk-factors responsible for development of KC in Australia's high-risk population. Cases were immune-competent adults from Townsville, Australia (19.3°S) who had a new basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) histologically-confirmed during 2004 to 2009. Cases were age-matched (±5 years) to immuno-competent, community-based controls from Townsville with no prior history of KC. Binary lo...

An online survey was sent to all dermatologists and dermatology residents in the Netherlands between July 2017 and April 2018. Treatments for nail psoriasis are limited, as nails are often difficult to treat with topical therapies alone, and relapse is common. Out-of-pocket Costs for Individuals with Atopic Eczema: A Cross-sectional Study in Nine European Countries.
Abstract Atopic eczema (AE) is one of the most common non-communicable inflammatory skin diseases, and has a huge socioeconomic impact. Studies on the everyday economic impact of AE on patients, however, are limited. To estimate the annual extra out-of-pocket spending due to AE among patients in Europe, a cross-sectional study using computer-assisted phone interviewing of patients with AE was performed in 9 European countries. A total of 1,189 patients (56% women) with AE, who were either eligible for, or on, systemic treatment, participated in the study between October 2017 and March 2018. Mean extra spending on ...
