Auditory System Involvement in Psoriasis.
e; SP Abstract Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disorder associated with many other chronic and progressive diseases. There are few studies on the association of psoriasis with alterations in auditory function. A clinical and instrumental pilot study of auditory function was performed with 77 psoriatic patients and 77 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The main results were: (i) hearing loss, mostly of sensorineural type, was significantly more frequent in patients than in controls; (ii) conductive and mixed hearing loss were more frequent in arthropathic than in non-arthropathic psoriatic patients; (iii) ...

Structured Diagnostic Approach and Risk Assessment in Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid with Oesophageal Involvement.
Abstract Oesophageal involvement in mucous membrane pemphigoid is considered rare, but it may be underdiagnosed. To assess the incidence of oesophageal involvement in a group of patients with newly diagnosed mucous membrane pemphigoid we retrospectively analysed the medical records of 30 consecutive patients with mucous membrane pemphigoid diagnosed between 2006 and 2016 at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Würzburg. Twenty-one patients (70%) reported symptoms indicative of oesophageal mucous membrane pemphigoid. Twelve patients (40%) underwent oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, and oesophageal pat...

Clinical Features of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria that Predict Disease Prognosis and Refractoriness to Standard Treatment.
au AM Abstract Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is characterized by heterogeneous activity, evolution, associated comorbidities and response to treatment. The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors in patients with CSU that predict disease course and response to standard treatments. An observational retrospective study was conducted in a cohort of 549 patients with CSU, comparing patients with isolated CSU and those with CSU with concomitant inducible urticaria (CSU-CIndU). The factors associated with a worse prognosis in terms of duration and/or CSU activity and its episodes were: multiple episod...

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Series of 37 Cases and Systematic Review of the Literature.
uin N Abstract Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common skin cancers and can lead to patient death. Early diagnosis of node metastasis is a major goal for dermatologists and oncologists. The sentinel lymph node procedure has been proposed to improve this issue but is still debated. To evaluate the efficacy and the impact of this technique on prognosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, 37 patients (Saint Louis Hospital, Paris - France) who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy and 290 cases from the literature were analyzed. Our work shows that the rate of positive sentinel lymph node biopsy w...

Overexpression of Amyloid Precursor Protein Promotes the Onset of Seborrhoeic Keratosis and is Related to Skin Ageing.
Abstract Seborrhoeic keratosis is an age-related skin disease. Amyloid precursor protein (APP) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of age-related Alzheimer's disease. The aim of this study was to elucidate the expression characteristics of APP in seborrhoeic keratosis tissues (n = 50), and explore whether the production of APP is related to the onset of seborrhoeic keratosis and skin ageing, including ultraviolet (UV)-induced ageing, as observed in normal skin (n = 79). The results of immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR showed that APP and its d...

Duration of Psoriatic Skin Disease as Risk Factor for Subsequent Onset of Psoriatic Arthritis.
Abstract It is unclear whether psoriasis is a progressive disease that requires early aggressive intervention. This population-based study identified patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Survival analysis and Kaplan-Meier life table techniques were used. The study comprised 10,011 psoriasis patients (severe n = 4,618), and 1,269 patients also had PsA. Incidence of PsA increased with duration of cutaneous symptoms (p = 0.0001). Psoriasis diagnosed before age 20 or 30 years, respectively, suggested a lower risk of PsA than psoriasis diagnosed after age 50 years, yet age ...

Evaluation of IgG4+ Plasma Cell Infiltration in Patients with Systemic Plasmacytosis and Other Plasma Cell-infiltrating Skin Diseases.
This study examined IgG4+/IgG+ plasma cell ratios in 4 patients with systemic plasmacytosis and 12 patients with other skin diseases that show marked infiltration of plasma cells. Furthermore, we examined whether these cases met 1 of the pathological diagnostic criteria for IgG4-related disease (i.e. IgG4+/IgG plasma cells ratio of over 40%). Only one out of 4 patients with systemic plasmacytosis met the criterion. These results suggest that systemic plasmacytosis and IgG4-related disease are distinct diseases. 8-Methoxypsoralen Plus Ultraviolet A Reduces the Susceptibility of Murine Skin to Mount a Psoriatic Response to Imiquimod Linked with Senescence and Downregulation of Interleukin-9, 17 and Interferon-gamma.
f P Abstract The effects of 8-methoxypsoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) on imiquimod-induced psoriasis were examined in a mouse model. Mouse skin was treated with repetitive sub-phototoxic doses of PUVA or UVB before or during the induction of toll-like receptor 7/8 activation and psoriasis through the application of imiquimod. PUVA, to a greater degree than UVB, suppressed the established imiquimod-induced psoriatic phenotype, but pretreatment with PUVA prior to administration of imiquimod also reduced the susceptibility of murine skin to respond to imiquimod to a greater degree than did U...
