Basophil Fc εRI Expression in Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: A Poten-tial Immunological Predictor of Response to Omalizumab Therapy.
This study investigated the effect of omalizumab on expression of the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) on blood basophils from patients with active CSU, and its association with the clinical response. Patients exhibiting significant clinical improvement showed a sharp reduction in the levels of basophil FcεRI after 4 weeks, which was maintained throughout the total duration of the treatment. Such evolution was not observed in non-responder patients. Furthermore, non-responders showed significantly lower baseline levels of FcεRI than responders. Baseline basophil FcεRI expression was found ...

Pattern and Severity of Psoriasiform Eruptions in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Arthritis or Skin Inflammatory Disorders Treated with TNF alpha Inhibitors.
l J Abstract Psoriasiform eruptions are a classical adverse skin reaction of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors. The aim of this study was to identify the association between the severity or pattern of psoriasiform reactions and the underlying disease. A retrospective study was conducted between January 2012 and May 2015. Adult patients who developed psoriasiform eruptions whilst being treated with TNFα inhibitors were included. For each patient, 3 independent blinded dermatologists graded twice the severity of the lesions according to 6 clinical psoriasiform eruption types. Inter- and intra-ind...

Morbidity and Causes of Death in Patients with Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma in Finland.
Ranki A Abstract Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), especially mycosis fungoides, can be considered as a state of longstanding low-grade systemic inflammation. Many studies have focused on secondary cancers with CTCL, but information about comorbidities is limited. A total of 144 patients with CTCL at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2005 to 2015 were studied to determine associated comorbidities and causes of death in this cohort. Compared with an age-standardized control population, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was increased among patients with CTCL with no link to obesity. Patients with...

Peripheral NMDA Receptor/NO System Blockage Inhibits Itch Responses Induced by Chloroquine in Mice.
Abstract Intradermal administration of chloroquine (CQ) provokes scratching behavior in mice. Chloroquine-induced itch is histamine-independent and we have reported that the nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway is involved in CQ-induced scratching behavior in mice. Previous studies have demonstrated that activation of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) induces NO production. Here we show that NMDAR antagonists significantly decrease CQ-induced scratching in mice while a non-effective dose of an NMDAR agonist potentiates the scratching behavior provoked by sub-effective doses of CQ. ...

Abstract The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with methyl aminolevulinate is reduced when treating actinic keratosis (AK) on the extremities in comparison with the face and scalp. Studies indicate that PDT efficacy can be improved by combining PDT with other treatment modalities. This randomized intra-individual study investigated whether pretreatment with topical 5% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) enhanced the treatment efficacy of daylight-mediated PDT in 24 patients with AKs on the hands. One hand of each patient was given 7 days of pretreatment with 5-FU twice daily before daylight-PDT, whereas the other hand was ...
