Quality of Life of Parents of Children with Atopic Dermatitis.
Abstract Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic dermatitis in children. The influence of AD on quality of life of parents of children with AD was studied using the Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI). Fifty children with AD were included in the study (age range 2-24 months) together with their parents. Children's AD was found to influence the quality of life of both parents; however, it had a more significant influence on quality of life of mothers than that of fathers (mean FDLQI: 17.1 ± 5.3 vs. 14.7 ± 5.8 points; p

Morbidity and Causes of Death in Patients with Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma in Finland.
Ranki A Abstract Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), especially mycosis fungoides, can be considered as a state of longstanding low-grade systemic inflammation. Many studies have focused on secondary cancers with CTCL, but information about comorbidities is limited. A total of 144 patients with CTCL at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2005 to 2015 were studied to determine associated comorbidities and causes of death in this cohort. Compared with an age-standardized control population, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was increased among patients with CTCL with no link to obesity. Patients with...

Socioeconomic Inequalities and Severity of Plaque Psoriasis at a First Consultation in Dermatology Centers.
, Schmutz JL, Bravard P, Resopso MS Abstract Psoriasis has major physical, psychological, and social impacts: its management should not be restricted by individual financial considerations in Western countries as these have well-structured health systems and social/insurance coverage. We investigated if the socioeconomic characteristics of patients were associated with severity of psoriasis and access to healthcare. In a cross-sectional study, we included 903 patients with psoriasis that were consulting for the first time. We showed that low educational level was associated with severity of disease in multivariate...

Peripheral NMDA Receptor/NO System Blockage Inhibits Itch Responses Induced by Chloroquine in Mice.
Abstract Intradermal administration of chloroquine (CQ) provokes scratching behavior in mice. Chloroquine-induced itch is histamine-independent and we have reported that the nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway is involved in CQ-induced scratching behavior in mice. Previous studies have demonstrated that activation of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) induces NO production. Here we show that NMDAR antagonists significantly decrease CQ-induced scratching in mice while a non-effective dose of an NMDAR agonist potentiates the scratching behavior provoked by sub-effective doses of CQ. ...

Pretreatment with 5-Fluorouracil Cream Enhances the Efficacy of Daylight-mediated Photodynamic Therapy for Actinic Keratosis.
Abstract The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with methyl aminolevulinate is reduced when treating actinic keratosis (AK) on the extremities in comparison with the face and scalp. Studies indicate that PDT efficacy can be improved by combining PDT with other treatment modalities. This randomized intra-individual study investigated whether pretreatment with topical 5% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) enhanced the treatment efficacy of daylight-mediated PDT in 24 patients with AKs on the hands. One hand of each patient was given 7 days of pretreatment with 5-FU twice daily before daylight-PDT, whereas the other hand was ...

Overexpression of Psoriasin (S100A7) Contributes to Dysregulated Differentiation in Psoriasis.
k C Abstract Psoriasin, which is highly expressed in psoriasis, is encoded by a gene located within the epidermal differentiation complex. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of endogenous psoriasin on disturbed keratinocyte differentiation in psoriasis. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a gradient of psoriasin expression in the psoriatic epidermis with highest expression in the suprabasal, differentiated layers. Induction of keratinocyte differentiation caused concurrent expression of psoriasin and the differentiation marker involucrin. The differentiation-induced psoriasin expression was foun...

Opioid Receptors in Psoriatic Skin: Relationship with Itch.
Abstract Psoriasis is an inflammatory immunogenetic skin disease, often accompanied by itch. Opioid receptors are known regulators of itch sensation in the central nervous system. In the brain, μ-opioid receptors may potentiate itch, while activation of κ-opioid receptors may reduce or even alleviate itch; however, the role of opioid receptors in itch perception in the skin is poorly understood. To further elucidate the role of opioid receptors in the neurobiology of psoriatic itch, punch biopsies of non-lesional and lesional skin of patients with psoriasis and healthy controls were studied. Real-time pol...

A Role for Neuregulin-1 in Promoting Keloid Fibroblast Migration via ErbB2-mediated Signaling.
Abstract Keloid disease is a fibroproliferative tumour characterised by aggressive local invasion, evident from a clinically and histologically active migrating margin. During combined laser capture microdissection and microarray analysis-based in situ gene expression profiling, we identified upregulation of the polypeptide growth factor neuregulin-1 (NRG1) and ErbB2 oncogene in keloid margin dermis, leading to the hypothesis that NRG1 contributed to keloid margin migration through ErbB2-mediated signalling. The aim of this study was to probe this hypothesis through functional in vitro studies. Exogenous NRG1 addi...
