Treating angina pectoris by acupuncture therapy.
Authors: Xu L, Xu H, Gao W, Wang W, Zhang H, Lu DP Abstract Acupuncture therapy on PC 6 (Neiguan) has a therapeutic effect on cardiac and chest ailments including angina pectoris. Additional beneficial acupuncture points are PC 4 (Ximen), HT 7 (Shenmen point), PC 7 (Daling point), PC 5 (Jianshi point), PC 3 (Quze point), CV 17 (Danzhong point), CV 6 (Qihai point), BL 15 (Xinshu point), L 20 (Pishu point), BL 17 (Geshu point), BL23 (Shenshu point), BL18 (Ganshu point), HT 5 (Tongli point), and ST36 (Zusanli point). Acupuncture not only quickly relieve the symptoms of acute angina pectoris, but also improve ...

Cervical ripening before first trimester surgical evacuation for non-viable pregnancy.
CONCLUSIONS: This review found no evidence to evaluate cervical ripening prior to first trimester surgical evacuation for miscarriage for reducing the rate of cervical or uterine injury, however, this may be because these outcomes are very rare. Cervical preparation was shown to reduce the need for manual cervical dilatation compared with placebo.Misoprostol and isosorbide mononitrate and dinitrate were similarly effective in ripening the cervix, however there was more vomiting with misoprostol. Mechanical (Dilapan-S hygroscopic) dilators performed similarly to chemical dilators. The nine studies included in this review wer...

Anti-hypoxia Activity of the Novel NO Donor Acetyl Ferulic Isosorbide Mononitrate in Acute High-Altitude Hypoxia Mice.
Abstract Nitric oxide (NO) may act as either a pro-oxidant or an antioxidant in biological systems. Previous work has found inhalation of NO improved survival in a high altitude rat model. NO donor isosorbide mononitrate derivants might have a protective effect against hypoxia. We synthesized a series of isosorbide mononitrate derivant compounds to test their anti-hypoxia activities. Normobaric hypoxia and hypobaric hypoxia models were used to study the protective role of NO donor in mice. The results showed isosorbide mononitrate derivants had protective effects in hypoxia mice. Among those compounds, ace...

An in vivo safety and efficacy demonstration of a topical liposomal nitric oxide donor treatment for Staphylococcus aureus biofilm-associated rhinosinusitis.
Abstract The burden of drug resistance emerges in the wake of chronic and repeated antibiotic use. This underpins the importance of discovering alternatives to current antibiotic regimens. In chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), topical therapy such as nasal douches and steroid sprays is the mainstay of treatment. However, bacterial sinusitis such as those with Staphylococcus aureus biofilm infection point to more recalcitrant CRS subtypes, focusing research efforts into topical antimicrobial therapies. In the sinuses, both local mucosal and systemic effects must be considered in designing any new topical medicat...

Synergistic apoptosis-inducing effect of aspirin and isosorbide mononitrate on human colon cancer cells.
In conclusion, the present study was the first, to the best of our knowledge, to report on the synergistic apoptosis-inducing effects of aspirin and ISMN in human colon cancer cells, which were mediated via Wnt and NO signaling pathways. The results of the present study will facilitate the development of future therapeutic strategies. PMID: 26094902 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Molecular Medicine Reports)

Successful treatment using corticosteroids in a patient with refractory vasospastic angina and bronchial asthma
We report a 55-year-old female patient with refractory vasospastic angina and bronchial asthma treated successfully with corticosteroids. She was diagnosed with vasospastic angina by coronary angiography and the acetylcholine provocation test. Even after administration of oral vasodilators (benidipine, diltiazem, nicorandil, isosorbide mononitrate) she had recurrent chest pain with ST elevation. She had a history of bronchial asthma, so we added 30mg/day of oral prednisolone. Her symptoms disappeared completely upon treatment. This case report suggests that corticosteroids are a therapeutic choice for patients with refract...

Drug efficacy in treating stable angina pectoris: a protocol for network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
This study aims to fill this gap of research by conducting a Bayesian network meta-analysis to compare all these antianginal drugs. Methods and analyses Randomised controlled trials (RCT) on the drug therapy of stable angina pectoris with multiple outcome measures, selected from symptomatic relief, ECG tests, exercise tests, heart rates and blood pressures, etc, will be included. Overall effect sizes will be represented as mean differences with 95% credible intervals (CrI) for continuous outcome data and as ORs with 95% CrI for dichotomous outcome data. Bayesian network meta-analysis by WinBUGS will be conducted to compar...

Analysis of the pretreatment effect of ethanol on the stratum corneum- and hair follicular-penetration of drugs using the hair follicle-plugging method.
Abstract The hair follicle-plugging method was used to analyze the effects of EtOH on skin permeation pathways. Methods: In vitro permeation experiments were performed on 4 model drugs [isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN), ionized lidocaine (ionized LC), fluorescein (FL), and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran 4 kDa (FD-4)] using excised pig ear skin. The skin permeations of ionized LC, FL, and FD-4 were decreased by hair follicle-plugging. Hair follicle-plugging prevented the skin permeation of FL and FD-4 in EtOH-pretreated skin, but did not prevent that of ISMN. On the other hand, the effect of hair ...
