Sclerotherapy with 3% polidocanol foam for the treatment of mucocutaneous bridges and/or residual piles after open excisional hemorrhoidectomy
AbstractInjection sclerotherapy is an effective and safe treatment in selected cases. It might be used as the first treatment for I-III degree hemorrhoidal disease (HD), but also as a bridge therapy for more severe cases not amenable to invasive treatments. However, concerning the long-term recurrence rate, open excisional hemorrhoidectomy remains the gold standard in cases of III- and IV-degree HD. In this context, it is recommended to perform the excision of no more than three piles and to preserve the muco-cutaneous bridges to avoid post-operative anal stenosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate surgical outcomes and...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 318: Development of Systemic Interventions to Decrease Breast Cancer Risk: A Group Concept Mapping Study
Buermeyer As breast cancer continues to take a devasting public health toll, most primary prevention approaches are targeted at individual actions. We have proposed, instead, developing systemic, population approaches to preventing the disease. We used a combined qualitative–quantitative methodology, group concept mapping (GCM), to identify Importance and Feasibility ratings of systemic interventions across a wide spectrum of approaches and stakeholders. Participants (n = 351) from across the state of California sorted 84 potential interventions into topical piles, and then rated each intervention on perc...

Changes in the content of emerging pollutants and potentially hazardous substances during vermi/composting of a mixture of sewage sludge and moulded pulp
This study deals with composting and vermicomposting of pre-composted mixtures of two different kinds of sewage sludge blended with moulded pulp in an operating composting plant. Of the total number and concentration of pollutants detected in individual piles, a large percentage of them were reduced by the composting process. The composting 2 process resulted in the greatest reduction in contaminating substances--a total of 19 substances by 4.39-90.4%. Some pharmaceuticals accumulated in earthworm bodies during vermicomposting; a total of 11 substances were detected. Atorvastatin showed the highest percentage reduction in ...

Phytochemistry and pharmacology of Piper nigrum
AbstractBlack pepper (Piper nigrum) has been used as an antidote for cough, cold, dyspnoea, throat illnesses, intermittent fever, dysentery, stomach ache, worms, and piles in traditional medicine. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and to treat epilepsy and snakebite. Black pepper is a common spice in Asian cuisine, and it has applications in traditional medicine, perfumes, preservatives, and pesticides. Piperine, an alkaloid, increases the therapeutic efficacy of a variety of medications, vaccines, and nutrients by increasing bioavailability by blocking several digestive enzymes. Piperine also promotes ...

Composting reduces the risks of resistome in beef cattle manure at the transcriptional level
The objective of this study is to compare composting and stockpiling for their effectiveness in reducing the risk of antibiotic resistance in beef cattle manure. Samples collected from the center and the surface of full-size manure stockpiling and composting piles were subject to metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. While the distinctions in resistome between stockpiled and composted manure were not evident at the DNA level, the advantages of composting over stockpiling were evident at the transcriptomic level in terms of the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the number of ARG subtypes, and the preva...

Analgesic effect of local anaesthetic in haemorrhoid banding: systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThis review supports the use of LA for reducing early post-procedural pain following haemorrhoid banding. The evidence was limited by small sample sizes and substantial heterogeneity across studies.RegistrationPROSPERO (ID CRD42022322234) (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Effects of naphthoquinones from the roots of Onosma armeniacum Klokov on wound healing
The objective was to evaluate the plant's ethnopharmacological applications using in vivo pharmacological experimental models. In vivo linear incision and circular excision the wound models were used to assess the wound healing activity along with histopathological investigation. The active component(s) were isolated and identified after being exposed to several chromatographic separation procedures on the primary extract. The n-hexane-dichloromethane mixture extract was subjected to chromatographic separation after the wound-healing activity was confirmed. Deoxyshikonin (1), β,β-dimethylacrylshikonin (2), a-methyl-n-but...

Aluminum potassium sulfate and tannic acid (ALTA) sclerotherapy for hemorrhoidal disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: ALTA sclerotherapy may be a safe and viable alternative for patients with hemorrhoidal disease. Long-term follow up and high-quality randomized controlled trials will help define the place of ALTA sclerotherapy in the armamentarium of treatment of hemorrhoids.PMID:38428446 | DOI:10.1080/00015458.2024.2326273 (Source: Acta Chirurgica Belgica)

Seasonal impact of acid mine drainage on water quality and potential ecological risk in an old sulfide exploitation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Feb 22. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32367-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSulfides are usually associated with deposits of metals and coal. The reactive wastes from their exploitation, typically stored in piles and tailings dams, are often the mining sector's primary source of environmental problems. The surrounding river waters can present signs of acid mine drainage, responsible for aquatic ecosystem degradation. So, the main target of the present study is to investigate the impact of this process on the water's environmental quality and potential ecological risk. The study area is located a...
