Is aortic knob width a novel predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients?
CONCLUSIONS: Age, male gender, aortic calcification, and hypertension are the primary risk factors for increased aortic knob width in hemodialysis patients. Aortic knob width greater than 37.98 mm, which can be measured simply and rapidly using posterior-anterior chest radiography, may be a predictor of mortality.GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT: https://www.europeanreview.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/Graphical-Abstract-10.jpg.PMID:38639520 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35909 (Source: European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences)

The Ottawa Statement implementation guidance document for cluster randomized trials in the hemodialysis setting
Research teams are increasingly interested in using cluster randomized trial (CRT) designs to generate practice-guiding evidence for in-center maintenance hemodialysis. However, CRTs raise complex ethical issues. The Ottawa Statement on the Ethical Design and Conduct of Cluster Randomized Trials, published in 2012, provides 15 recommendations to address ethical issues arising within 7 domains: justifying the CRT design, research ethics committee review, identifying research participants, obtaining informed consent, gatekeepers, assessing benefits and harms, and protecting vulnerable participants. Is social deprivation associated with the peritoneal dialysis outcomes? A cohort study with REIN registry data
CONCLUSION: In PD patients, social deprivation was not associated with death or the composite event of death or transfer to HD. Socially deprived individuals had a greater risk of transfer to HD and lower access to kidney transplantation in the competing risk analysis.PMID:38632672 | DOI:10.1177/08968608241237685 (Source: Peritoneal Dialysis International)

Hemodiafiltration with endogenous reinfusion for uremic toxin removal in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: a pilot study
CONCLUSION: HFR treatment effectively eliminates uremic toxins from the bloodstream of patients undergoing MHD, especially protein-bound toxins and large middle-molecule toxins. Additionally, it retains essential physiological compounds like albumin and branched-chain amino acids, underscoring its commendable safety profile.PMID:38632963 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2338929 (Source: Renal Failure)
