SCCM Pod-495: Renal Resurgence: Exploring CRRT's Impact on Critical Illness and AKI
Join host Pamela M. Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, FACSM, as she delves into the critical topic of acute kidney injury (AKI) and its significant impact on critically ill patients. Guest Javier Neyra, MD, MSCS, offers a comprehensive overview of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in AKI, exploring the preferred modalities and technical considerations. With a focus on the benefits of continuous therapy versus hemodialysis, the discussion sheds light on indications for continuous RRT (CRRT), emphasizing the importance of early intervention and nephrology consultation. Haemodiafiltration, haemofiltration and haemodialysis for end-stage kidney disease
There is considerable interest in innovative dialysis therapies for people with kidney failure, in particular to remove larger circulating toxins that are poorly removed by standard haemodialysis, which are associated with higher mortality and infection. In an updated Cochrane review, published in May 2015, Suetonia Palmer from Christchurch in New Zealand and colleagues, brought together the studies of the impact of haemodiafiltration on patient outcomes. She tells us what they found in this evidence pod. (Source: Podcasts from The Cochrane Library)

Pre-emptive correction of stenosis of the arteriovenous access for haemodialysis
Haemodialysis is the most common treatment for kidney failure, but problems can arise with access to the patient’s bloodstream. A new Cochrane Review from January 2016 examines the evidence for preventing one of these problems, the development of a stenosis. The lead author of the review, Pietro Ravani, from the University of Calgary in Canada, describes the findings in this Evidence Pod. (Source: Podcasts from The Cochrane Library)
