And he has discovered a new freedom of spirit and attitude in realizing just how great you can feel by following this lifestyle. Transcript: Keoni Butcher, Tracy California: I was obese. Let me introduce you to zein
Zein is a protein in corn (“maize” outside the U.S.) that, if held side-by-side against the gliadin protein of wheat, rye, or barley, overlaps substantially in structure (i.e., amino acid sequence). In other words, the zein protein of corn resembles the gliadin protein of other grains—not identical but with overlapping similarities in structure. This should come as no surprise, as corn and other grains share evolutionary history as grasses, not to mention ongoing exchange of genetic material over eons, given the impressive promiscuity of grasses and their ability to share and combine genetic material. (Re...

4 Signs You Have Food Intolerance
You're reading 4 Signs You Have Food Intolerance, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you're enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles. Food intolerance can be a nightmare for your body. When you suffer from this condition, you face difficulties in digesting food. You may experience symptoms like abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea. Foods that are most associated with food intolerance are gluten and dairy products that can cause discomfort or gas in the intestine. Symptoms of food intolerance don’t appear as quickly as food allergies. It usually take longer f...

Sesame Seed Flour
Sesame seeds actually make a very nice grain-free flour. Look for white or yellow seeds, not the dark or black, as less sesame flavor shows through (nor will the end-product be dark or black). Grind them in your food chopper, food processor, or coffee grinder until reduced to flour. (Stop when a flour-like consistency is achieved, as further grinding will yield seed butter.) If you don’t like the modest sesame seed flavor that comes through, you might find sesame seed flour more suited to a savory, rather than sweet, recipe. Look for bulk sesame seeds that are inexpensive, certainly less expensive than almonds to gri...

The Wheat Belly One-Way Street
There’s a practical reality to the Wheat Belly grain-free lifestyle, one that I believe some followers of the lifestyle fail to recognize. Understand these simple facts that I’ve discussed in the Wheat Belly books and your life will be simplified. By living the Wheat Belly grain-free lifestyle, you will find that: You cannot consume grain-containing foods without becoming ill. Many of you have learned this lesson the hard way and found, for instance, that eating a handful of French fries fried in oil also used to prepare fried chicken will have you sitting on the toilet while your gastrointestinal tract forcefu...

Hot chocolate for skin, joint, and brain health
Here’s a variation on the High-Fat Hot Chocolate recipe I’ve posted previously, this version replacing coconut oil with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil and adding collagen hydrolysates. (I used the Great Lakes brand sourced from pasture-raised, grass-fed livestock.) MCT oil reduces appetite, accelerates loss of visceral inflammatory fat, and improves energy and cognition (though we don’t know whether MCTs and ketones yield a nootropic or a neurotrophic effect). Recall that collagen hydrolysates gradually increase dermal collagen, thereby smoothing skin and reducing wrinkle depth, while also increasi...

Orthorexia: The extreme quest for a healthy diet
The pursuit for the healthiest diet continues. Just as I was finishing writing this blog post, a new study came out suggesting that both low-carb and high-carb diets may shorten lifespan. In the 1980s and ‘90s, we were following the low-fat trend. These days, the ketogenic diet and the very-low-carb diet are all the rage. And if you think there is controversy about the right amount of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins you should eat, the conversation can get downright ugly if we start talking about specific items like gluten. Research continues to look for insight into the best diet for humans. But the relentless focus o...

PCOS: A man-made situation
Most mainstream doctors believe that polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, is a disease. PCOS is, after all, associated with markedly increased risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, endometrial cancer, and heart disease, in addition to outward signs that include excessive facial and body hair, tendency to being overweight or obese, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility. A crisis of self esteem commonly and understandably results. Mainstream doctors tell you to not worry because they have plenty of prescription drugs to “treat” it, not to mention various hormones, fertility procedures, and gastric bypass. PCOS is a situa...

Seven things you probably didn ’ t know about IBS
To an impressive degree, irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, vividly illustrates what consuming wheat and grains do to the human body, as well as the myriad effects of factors such as GMOs containing glyphosate and Bt toxin, veggies and fruits with herbicides and pesticides, water “purified” with awful chemicals such as chloramine (MUCH longer lasting than chlorine in the body and environment), and commonly prescribed drugs like Protonix, Prilosec, and other stomach acid-suppressing drugs. You may already know that many people obtain relief from IBS symptoms just by banishing wheat and grains from their diet. But so...

Barbecue Better for Labor Day
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, when many of us enjoy a long weekend with friends and family and toast the season with a backyard barbecue. The traditional meat-heavy barbecue menu can be hazardous to your health, but it doesn’t have to be. Some of the most popular barbecue foods are well-known to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes (and a number of other diseases, too!), like steak, pork ribs, processed red meats (hot dogs), refined grains (traditional pasta salads, rolls, potato chips), and processed, added sugars (sodas, desserts). But we can help you make over your Labor Day celebration menu with healt...
