Specific question about Work/Activities
I was an athlete in undergrad, and an important part of my current app includes demonstrating the level of commitment I had to my sport. I had a low GPA in undergrad , and did a lot of GPA repair with 2 years of post-bac work after making significant changes in my study habits and dropping athletics. I was an all-regional athlete for one of my collegiate years (this was several years ago), but through a clerical error, I was never listed on the online publication of all the all-regional... Plan B: "Pre-meds" with poor GPAs that gave up on medical field dreams, where are they now?
So after taking the time out to really think about it, I am done with the medical field for good so I am not considering DO, dental school, nursing school, or anything in health care profession anymore. Now the conventional advice on this forum for people in that situation tends to be: 1. Go postbacc and ace that. 2. Apply DO/grade replacement. 3. SMP if you really want that MD. Now the common advice tends to be, from some others, "FIND ANOTHER CAREER". I mean the amount of GPA repair you... UCLA GPA Repair, Gap Year Work, Post-Bacc v Masters
I'm a junior in MIMG/Microbio (Path 2) at UCLA. Currently 3.5c/3.2s with some ECs and research under my belt; will take the new MCAT before coming back for senior year. Though I can graduate in fall by major reqs completion, I may stick around to do GPA repair. May as well use that financial aid while I still can. Anyone from UCLA know some good, preferably upper-div (better than lower-div, right?) sGPA repair classes? I'm thinking astronomy and psychology, but are there... Grade Appeal?
I just got my grade back for a 6 credit class, and I got an A-. My prof took off 5 points on the midterm because they worded a question wrong, but I answered it the way it was worded. I would have gotten 98 on it, but got 93 instead. Should I try to appeal the grade? Keep in mind, I'm doing GPA repair right now and need straight A's. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Caribbean Failure
To anyone who may still be wanting to drink from the Caribbean kool-aid, maybe this cautionary tale will help reinforce why a US medical school is the best way to go. From his blog: "Dr. Bill" was a non-trad (RN for 19 years) who decided to pursue medicine at the age of 41. He elected to go to Saint James in the Carib to save time and not have to take the MCAT nor complete any GPA repair for his 2.7 undergrad GPA. He failed all his Steps initially, and it took multiple retakes for him to... Caribbean Failure (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What your patient is thinking: "My experience of stressed out staff..."
Growing up with pioneering treatment is the latest What your patient is thinking piece from The BMJ. It is written by Liza Morton who was the world's first 11 day old baby with congestive heart failure to be attached to an external cardiac pacemaker for complete heart block. She was fitted with five early implantable pacemakers  by thoracotomy before age 7, she had surgical repair of her atrial septal defect and her first variable rate pacemaker in her early teens, and four further variable rate pacemakers. She describes her childhood memories of being treated for congenital h...

Why is there a young woman advantage? Why is it lost?
The answer to this question has been elusive.  The Women’s Health Initiative was supposed to answer these questions but failed to find the advantage.  During my stent as cardiology champion, the notion of fundamental laws of biology and a model of health and disease began to form.  I used these principles to determine the difference between men and women.  The results of this endeavor are now available on line in the article.  Houck, PD. Why is there a young woman advantage? Why is it lost? Applying the laws of biology to men and women.  JCvD 2014. In press. The link is https://urldef...
