Another Cardiac Case
I always enjoy the case presentations around here and it's been a while since I contributed, so here was a fun case 54 y/o male underwent Sternotomy for CABG/MVR/MAZE/LLAA 2 months ago after presenting with an NSTEMI. BMI 42, recent hx of Meth and Marijuana use, current everyday smoker with questionable COPD (PFTs were fine), OSA on BiPAP while at hospital (non-compliant at home), and AFib on Elliquis. Surgery went uneventfully, had a Mitral Valve Repair (simple ring), good flow in... Another Cardiac Case (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Circ Arrest and Frozen Elephant Trunk vs Two Stage Repair
For aortic arch pathology, I have only been involved in dissections, congenital disease that extended into descending aorta, required both circ arrest and frozen elephant trunk. As such, I thought that was the standard of care for all these cases. Apparently this is not the case? Do any of you have recs for reading about anesthetics for which this is not the case? Can you point me to some evidence based decision tree??? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I take upper div. genetics, or another biochem course?
I'm looking for stuff to take next academic year, and my current finances and lack of work during COVID-19 means that I need to choose between an upper division genetics course, or an additional biochem course (metabolism). I've completed a year of general bio, and the genetics included in that sequence. I'm on a career change/GPA repair track if that means anything, and taken about 30 units worth of prerequisites so far; I've gotten an A in all classes so far. Which class do you think... First line treatment for newly diagnosed (but lifelong) adult ADHD-PI?
Stimulants? Non-stimulants? I would have thought that non-stimulants would be preferred, but I've seen pretty underwhelming effective sizes for them in the literature (patient is mid-50s with previous success mitral valve repair).. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Best Way to Repair Poor GPA Post-Graduation
Hello everyone! This is my first thread so please forgive me if someone has posted a similar thread on this page. I’m a senior about to graduate and wanting to take a gap year before dental school (planning to apply this upcoming cycle and/or the following cycle). Unfortunately, I struggled with some mental health issues during my time at my university due to the competitive nature of my university I was in and ended up with a 3.22 gpa (I was on track to have around 2.9 so I did... Too late to gain acceptance to SMPs at MD and DO schools?
I just had a devastating cycle and I have only one WL spot that might come to fruition, though I think it is unlikely. The rank list has not been released yet so there is still hope (DO). My question is if I can get my applications submitted this week for smps will I be too late or unlikely to be successful IDK if I can handle another gap year or the rejection. I did a DIY transcript repair cause I failed out of school twice before 12 and 8 years ago. So I have 3.8 my last 70 credits of... Too late to gain acceptance to SMPs at MD and DO schools? low gpa, high retake, where to apply?
I don't want to get too into it, I wouldn't call this like a "full" wamc or whatever but i have no clue on how to make a list with my stats about the author: 3.41 sgpa, cgpa 3.39. i would like to do gpa repair but due to many reasons its just not financially feasible. grad from jhu so hopefully explains the gpa a little bit?? but still obviously bad, and im hoping my mcat trend sells this idea that im better than i used to be. mcats 502->511->526. nontangibles: ok volunteering (like 300... low gpa, high retake, where to apply? Ambulatory regional anesthesia and support person
Hi all, Had a situation come up where a skinny 71 year old woman without much else going on medically who was getting rotator cuff repair with subacromial decompression. She planned to get a ride home with her neighbor but not have them stay with her, stating "my neighbor is just a call away." Surgeon is cool with this arrangement from his standpoint. Now I typically do interscalenes with just about every shoulder operation but I decided it as contraindicated in this patient because she... How long after DO sumbmission on average should you expect to get a notification as an outlier?
So I have abandoned most of my hopes of garnering any MD interviews. I don't care MD or DO for the most part past the realities of the Advantages career-wise of one over the other I just want to be a doctor. I submitted in mid to late August and haven't heard anything from 22 schools except for three rejections pre II with a Goro Fata school list. I am a non-trad reinvention student with solid ECS a disaster of a transcript (F's (3) w's (20) before my DIY transcript repair of 70 credits at a... Aortic value replacement: choosing a program/surgeon edition
Hope this is an okay topic to post about. I'm a physician in another specialty and am trying to help a loved one choose a program for undergoing what will likely be an aortic valve replacement (cardiologist says repair won't be possible, but she'd be open to it if the surgeon feels it is). This is a relatively young woman w/ congenital heart dz s/p an initial surgery as a toddler, now with expected progression of both aortic valve regurgitation and stenosis requiring reoperation. The two... Aortic value replacement: choosing a program/surgeon edition (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Number of credits needed in a DIY post-bacc for transcript repair?
What is the ideal number of credits to have in a DIY post-bacc before applying? Is 27-30 credits at 4.0 in upper-division bio courses enough? The rest of my app is pretty solid. sGPA overall would be 3.2 upon applying, despite the stark upward trend. I would be willing to wait another year and take an addition 18-21 credits (if I can continue on this path, sGPA would be about 3.3), but if 27-30 is sufficient, I'd love to apply this next cycle. I plan on applying to DO and MD, would be... Number of credits needed in a DIY post-bacc for transcript repair? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Please Help: DIY Post-Bac and MCAT Timeline
Hi all! I am a few years removed from uG, have completed all pre-reqs, graduated with a cGPA of 3.5 and sGPA of 3.3 (uneven trends). I will be starting a year-long DIY post-bacc for transcript repair at a local university. Based on the curriculum offered, I plan to take the following courses: Fall 2019 (Total 11 credits) A&PI + Lab Microbiology + Lab Medical Informatics (can postpone for an alternative course in Summer) Spring 2020 (Total 12 credits) A&PII + Lab Evolution... Not sure which EC to include as my 15th entry
Hello, I currently have 14 entries in my work and activities section and am trying to decide what the nature of my last entry should be. I am debating between: 1) A hobby which is cycling and bike repair. I would basically talk about why I love cycling but mostly focus on how I also kind of offer a bike repair "service". It's basically me doing things as minor as fixing or replacing deflated tires or rusty chains to assembling bikes for those who bought a bike themselves but are struggling... WAMC - Non-trad student, GPA repair
Hi all, Thought I'd try this one out for size. Been speaking to a lot of counselors and academic advisors in person, but I use SDN so frequently and the community here has been absolutely fundamental in turning myself around academically. I am looking to apply in 2020, but want to get some idea of where I stand now. Of note, I am not opposed to going into a SMP if my academic stats are still not up to par. I had a low undergraduate GPA attributed to a perfect storms worth of reasons... WAMC - Non-trad student, GPA repair (Source: Student Doctor Network)
