Another case
91 year old female, 88 lbs 4‘9, scheduled for umbilical hernia repair (1 cm or less), no known comorbidities. Patient is badly scoliotic. Her vitals and labs are all normal. What is you plan? (This is. A case I had today, pretty standard but it kinda went sideways midway trough). (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Incorporating community college science classes into sGPA repair?
I have a V-shaped grade trend because of a health catastrophe my sophomore year: FR = 3.67, SO = 2.7, JR = 3.75, SR = 3.84. Because I'm not sure what specialty I want, I am trying really hard to get the numbers up to a point where I can apply to US MD schools to leave more options open. It's been an uphill battle simply because of how low I started. I am sitting at a 3.4 BCPM right now because of damage done by the D's and F's sophomore year. I am taking way more 300- and... Lumbar facet injection and Von Willebrand disease
18 yo female with a history of congenital scoliosis s/p surgical repair ~7 years ago. Apparently almost bled to death on the operating table. Later workup found that she has Von Willebrand's disease. Fast forward to now: Came in for axial back pain. Imaging shows some adjacent level disease in the facets. Was thinking about injecting. I think most would get a heme consult prior to proceeding with something like an epidural. Would you guys do the same for IA facet injection as well? thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does ortho require brute force/ power ? How hard or stressful is it physically?
I am a short guy . I imagine ortho procedures require lots of pushing pulling applying force. It kinda scares me . Even though i have interested in ortho and the way it restores funtions. I also like the fixing / mechanical repair aspect. But i dont want to end up doing something that i am unable to. Your suggestions? I havent seen many procedures but a fractured tibia where orthopod was pushing in a nail/ rod (excuse any misnomer). P.S .( I am not in US) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I take a W or CR for a post-bacc class or stick with my bad letter grade?
Hi everyone, I'm currently doing a DIY postbacc for GPA repair (currently sitting at a 3.38). One of the classes I'm taking this semester is cancer bio, but it turned out to be unlike anything I expected. The class is solely focused on the professor's research, exams are all essays specific to his published research papers, and he grades really harshly since it's all subjective. It's likely that I'll get a B- in this class and he does not curve. My school recently announced that they are... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Can I Repair My Transcript?
Hi all, Long time no see. I hope all my friends in the Pre-Med world are doing well. I come to you today to ask for advice on how to best repair my transcript for DO school. I have considered Optometry/Podiatry but I realized after doing some soul searching that medicine is still something I very much want to pursue, however I know that in my current circumstances I am pretty much guaranteed to be rejected. Some background. I am in my third year of undergrad and am currently preparing to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Very medicore OAT. Need advice (WAMC).
Hello! I would like some advice from the good people of this forum concerning my OAT results, which I got back yesterday. My cGPA is 3.2 and my sGPA is a bit below that (ditto with my pre-reqs - my post-bacc years-long repair process mostly focused on upper divisions). My biggest strength is my years of service in the ophthalmic field with both clinical and research accolades, which comes attached to good recommendations. My score is as follows: QR: 330 RC: 340 Biology: 350 GC: 290 OC... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Looking for advice - 6 years later
Hi all, Long story short, I have decided to pursue a medical school education. I graduated in 2014 and have worked in finance since. I understand my GPA needs help to make me competitive for a in-state school (NJ). I plan on returning to my alma mater to repair my GPA. A few questions: - What courses should I re-take? I am still working full time and not sure if it is worth re-taking courses scored C - What/how many upper level courses should I take to bump my GPA? - Does admission look... Rectus Sheath block
Anyone do these for umbilical hernia repair? I know that you are supposed to inject into the posterior fascia of the rectus abdominus. But it is a bit scary going that deep with the bowel right underneath. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

School List Request: Mid 20s, 3.3 GPA, 499 MCAT
Hello. To preface, I’m aware my numbers are on shaky ground, so we can get that out of the way. However, I think my numbers fall within some parameters for DO admission, especially when combined with my experiences. I’m in my mid 20s and graduated college four-ish years ago. The 3.3 cGPA was done with extensive post-bacc repair from a 3.0 via advanced science courses - genetics, pharmacology and the like. The 499 unfortunately comes from multiple retakes, including with the new COVID... School List Request: Mid 20s, 3.3 GPA, 499 MCAT (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Another purely hypothetical scenario
60ish male needs cysto w/ biopsies for staging of bladder cancer. 6.4cm ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm found incidentally on CT as part of work-up. 40 pack year smoker, no features that scream Marfan, ehlers danlos, etc. Patient seen by medicine who says “patient is optimized for surgery”. Seen by thoracic who says, patient can proceed under anesthesia and will consider repair if prognosis from cancer is reasonable based on staging, biopsies, etc. You’re assigned the case and despite... Alright, Let's Do A Case
Sup folks. I don't come around here much anymore. But popped in and saw that tips and tricks thread from years ago got bumped and figured hey, I'll post a silly little case for the residents for funsies. The patient is a 60 something year old getting a mitral repair. Otherwise healthy. The pump run is about 3.5 hours since it's a complex valve, and there are issues with bleeding from cannula sites after coming off. Still, the repair looks ok, and the heart looks fine on echo. LV is... Alright, Let's Do A Case (Source: Student Doctor Network)
