Associations of plant-based foods, red and processed meat, and dairy with gut microbiome in Finnish adults
ConclusionOur results suggest a potential association between plant-based foods and dairy or their subgroups with microbial diversity measures. Furthermore, our findings indicated that all the food groups were associated with distinct overall microbial community compositions. Plant-based food consumption particularly was associated with a larger number of putative beneficial species. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Mental well-being, work engagement, and work-related and personal resources among nurse managers: A structural equation model
CONCLUSION: Nurse managers' mental well-being can be supported by organisational strategies and national policies that enhance leadership skills and increase work-related resources, which, in turn, can manifest as psychological and professional capital and a sense of meaningfulness in work.Globally, the healthcare sector needs resilient and healthy nurse managers to respond to current and future challenges. They are key players in safeguarding the well-being and commitment of nursing staff and thereby improving the quality of care.PMID:38746559 | PMC:PMC11080371 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijnsa.2023.100140 (Source: Adv Data)

Upcycling of Agricultural Waste Stream to High-Molecular-Weight Bio-based Poly(ethylene 2,5-furanoate)
ChemSusChem. 2024 May 8;17(9):e202400773. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202400773.ABSTRACTInvited for this issue's cover is the group of Dr. Adina Anghelescu-Hakala at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The image shows that high-molecular-weight poly(ethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PEF) polymer can be produced from furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) or its esters as bio-based alternative to replace fossil-based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Comparison of Postoperative Complications After Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer with Antecolic Versus Retrocolic Reconstruction: A Population-Based Study
CONCLUSIONS: The rate of anastomotic complications did not differ after antecolic versus retrocolic reconstruction after total or partial gastrectomy. In total gastrectomies, the risk of major complications was lower after antecolic compared with retrocolic reconstruction.PMID:38750189 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15415-5 (Source: Ann Oncol)

The antecedents of oral care in nursing facilities - a qualitative interview study among supervisor nurses
CONCLUSIONS: The performed analysis identified five main categories to describe antecedents for oral care in Finnish nursing facilities. The categories that needed to be improved were knowledge and attitude, and motivation related to oral care.PMID:38747573 | DOI:10.2340/aos.v83.40686 (Source: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica)

Small sea with high traffic - what is the biofouling potential of commercial ships in the Baltic Sea
This study estimated the biofouling load to Baltic Sea Region (BSR) based on the wetted surface area (WSA) method with regard to country, ship type and donor bioregion. WSA flux reached 656 km2, of which 86% was associated with ships operating inside and 14% was WSA flux brought by ships from outside of the Baltic Sea. Most of the WSA was transported to Swedish, Finnish and Danish ports as well. The highest WSA flux was assigned to roll-on/roll-off, passenger and general cargo ships. The high biofouling potential in BSR indicates a potential high risk to the environment and, therefore there is an urgent need for appropriat...
