As the lakes that flamingos inhabit expand, the birds ’ food supplies are rapidly shrinking
Every year, millions of lesser flamingos ( Phoeniconaias minor ) flock to a few small soda lakes in East Africa, attracting as many tourists as do migrating wildebeest. But the bright pink birds’ numbers are falling sharply, a decline researchers have now linked to a paradoxical effect of climate change. Rainfall in the region is increasing, expanding the lakes, which might suggest the flamingos’ habitat is growing. But the extra water  dilutes the nutrients in the lakes, depleting the microbes on which the birds feed, researchers report today in Current Biology . So, even as the lakes expand...

Animal Handling Practice Among Rural Households in Northwest Ethiopia Increases the Risk of Childhood Diarrhea and Exposure to Pathogens From Animal Sources
CONCLUSION: Domestic animals and their excreta are not hygienically contained in the area. Animal handling practices including their excreta and the hygiene behavior of female head of households (eg, handwashing and food handling practices) should be improved to prevent childhood diarrhea.PMID:38596430 | PMC:PMC11003343 | DOI:10.1177/11786302241245057 (Source: Environmental Health Insights)

Predictors of late initiation of breastfeeding practice in Ethiopia: a multilevel mixed-effects analysis of recent evidence from EDHS 2019
Conclusion More than one-fourth of newborn children do not start breast feeding within the WHO-recommended time (first hour). Programmes should focus on promoting the health facility birth and increasing the ANC visits. Further emphasis should be placed on young mothers and those who deliver via caesarean section to improve the timely initiation of breast feeding. (Source: BMJ Open)

Larvicidal, Ovicidal, and Repellent Activities of < em > Leucas stachydiformis < /em > (Hochst. ex Benth.) Briq Essential Oil against < em > Anopheles arabiensis < /em >
J Trop Med. 2024 Mar 29;2024:1051086. doi: 10.1155/2024/1051086. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTLarvicidal, ovicidal, and repellent activities of the essential oil extracted by hydrodistillation from the leaves of the endemic Ethiopian plant Leucas stachydiformis (Hochst. ex Benth.) Briq were investigated against Anopheles arabiensis, the dominant malaria vector species in Ethiopia with the objective of searching for a plant-based malaria vector control strategy from medicinal plants. The larvicidal effect was tested against the fourth instar An. arabiensis wild larvae whilst freshly laid ova of An. arabiensis were used to deter...

Tuberculosis treatment delay and contributing factors within tuberculosis patients in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: The tuberculosis treatment delay in Ethiopia was considerably unexpected and basic personal variables and facility related variables were statistically associated with treatment. Therefore, Ethiopian TB control programs have to recognize and tackle the problem, obstacles, and vulnerability across the continuum patient care taking down and connecting to treatment post-diagnosis. This can be achieved by capacitating both government and non-governmental service provision centers and minimizing unfilled difference across professional awareness and skill, which will contribute further to minimizin...
