Wednesday Bible Study: False prophecy
Psalm 87 is rather opaque. What seems to be going on here is that Zion, i.e Jerusalem, is envisioned as essentially the capital of the world -- that is, the world as it was known to the ancient Judeans. Obviously that never happened. It ' s not clear when this was written or what the intent really is. " Rahab " apparently refers to a legendary monster supposedly slain by Yahweh, as mentioned later in Psalm 89, not the helpful brothel keeper of the Book of Joshua, and it is thought to be a metonym for Egypt, though I ' m not sure why scholars think so. Regarding Psalm 88, nobody knows whatMahalath Leannoth means. Mahal...

Sunday Sermonette: Obscurantism
Psalm 67 is a mercifully brief, simple song of praise. Psalm 68, however, is both exceedingly long and has been called the" most difficult and obscure of the psalms. "The RSV actually covers up some of the difficulty, for example by translating verse 4 as " His name is the Lord, " whereas the Hebrew actually says " His name is Yah. " That is a specific short form of Yahweh. The KJV spells if Jah, as do Rastafarians who prefer it as the name of god, but the Hebrew pronunciation is closer to English Y than J. The form Yah appears 43 times in the Psalms, but otherwise only once in Exodus and several times in Isaiah. It is par...

Seeking Success in Science Through NIH-Funded Training
Credit: Courtesy of Hasset Nurelegne. “What’s great about a career in research is that there are so many paths you can take. I get so excited for the future when I think about all the open doors ahead of me,” says Hasset Nurelegne, a senior at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Hasset is majoring in neuroscience and behavioral biology (NBB) as well as English. Since her first year on campus, Hasset has been an active participant in an NIGMS-funded program at Emory that aims to develop a diverse pool of scientists, the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) (which is now just for graduate student...

Sunday Sermonette: Desperate to get this over with
neJob now goes on a three chapter rant saying the same shit over and over again that he already said nineteen times. I ' m really sorry about this, I ' m as anxious to come to the end of it as you are. So I ' m going to post three chapters today, they ' re all Job yammering on so why not? It ' s just more of God and His creation are beyond understanding; and I ' m righteous, I don ' t deserve this, but nevertheless I ' m not going to say anything bad about God.  I ' ll just make a couple of notes.First, all of the stuff Job says we can ' t possibly understand -- notably in Chapter 28 -- we do understand, at least a lo...

Ignorance is Strength
The next item on our bullet list: " An open border is no border. " Taken as a hypothetical, this would be half true. When you cross an open border, you enter a new jurisdiction and become subject to its laws. The border between Maryland and Virginia is open, but it ' s still a border. The same goes for the national borders within the European Union. To be sure, that has caused some friction, but it is obviously incorrect to say that they aren ' t borders at all. Keeping people out is not the only function of a border. That said, what this is supposed to mean is that keeping people out is indeed the principal func...

Wednesday Bible Study: Historical oddity
Sorry for missing regular posting recently. I was dealing with some extremely frustrating technical problems. Will get back to it. Chapter 8 departs in a few ways from what has been our understanding of the situation of the Jewish population in this historical era. Note again the complete lack of any mention of Jerusalem or Judah. The Jews appear to be dispersed throughout the Achaemenid empire, from " India to Ethiopia. " Furthermore it is possible for people to convert to Judaism everywhere in this diaspora, which is basically contrary to the law and custom in all of the previous literature, in which far from being ...

Science Snippet: Antioxidants Explained
Many types of fruits, vegetables, and legumes are rich in antioxidants. Credit: iStock. While at the grocery store, you’ve likely noticed foods with labels saying they contain antioxidants, but what does that mean? In short, antioxidants are substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. Many foods, including fruits and vegetables, naturally produce antioxidants like vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and selenium. Our bodies also naturally produce antioxidant molecules such as alpha-lipoic acid, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10. Antioxidants are united by their ability to donate electrons, whi...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 23: The Great Rapprochement
George SelginWhat finally brought the Great Depression to an end? We ' ve seen that, whatever it was, it took place not during the 30s but sometime between then and the end of World War II, when a remarkable postwar revival occurred instead of the renewed depression many feared. We ' ve also seen that, while postwar fiscal and monetary policies weren ' t austere to the point of preventing that revival, they alone can ' t explain it, because they can ' t explain the reawakening of private business investment from its decade-and-a-half-long slumber.Animal SpiritsTo get to the bottom of that reawakening, we must first recall ...

Sunday Sermonette: Nope, never happened
The Book of Kings does tell us that Asa became king of Judah, and that he eliminated shrines to foreign gods. However, contrary to what we read below in Chronicles 14:3,  1 Kings: 15 says "Although he did not remove the high places, Asa ’s heart was fully committed to theLord all his life. "The Book of Kings entirely omits the succeeding story about the invasion by Zerah and the great battle. The Cushite kingdom is traditionally associated with Ethiopia, and the KJV identifies Zerah as Ethiopian, but the NIV translators don ' t tell us where they think he came from. It is of course inconceivable that anyone in ...

Wednesday Bible Study: Plagiarism
It ' s a bit puzzling, but 2 kings 19 and Isaiah 37 are essentially identical. Isaiah is a bit player here, but he gets a whole book later on, and this chapter is in it. I ' m not into the weeds of biblical scholarship, but as I understand it the Book of Isaiah is cobbled together, apparently by three different authors, and one of them lifted this. As I said last time, there is no historical record of an outright defeat of Sennacherib in his Levantine campaign, but there is some indication that sickness in his camp may have discouraged him from actually entering Jerusalem. Just a reminder that until the last few chapters, ...
