A cross-sectional study on the proper administration of eye medications and its determinants among outpatients attending Brhan Aini Ophthalmic National Referral Hospital in Asmara, Eritrea
Conclusion This research revealed that there was an inappropriate administration technique and disposal practices of eye medications among ophthalmic outpatients. This requires immediate attention from policy-makers, programme managers and healthcare professionals to ensure the appropriate use of eye medications by the patients. (Source: BMJ Open)

Perspectives of refugee parents and unaccompanied minors on initial health assessment and access to care
Conclusion: The perspectives of refugee parents and unaccompanied minors revealed opportunities to improve the experience of and access to health care of refugees entering the Netherlands, especially risk-specific screening and more adequate education about health, diseases, and the Dutch health care system. What is Known:•  Refugees have specific health needs due to pre-flight, flight, and resettlement conditions. Health assessment upon entry was non-obligatory in the Netherlands, except for the tuberculosis screening. Health needs were not always met, and refugees experienced barriers in access to care. What is New:• ...

Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in Patients with Vaginal Discharge: A 2019-2022 Analysis at the National Health Laboratory in Eritrea
CONCLUSION: Most gram-negative bacteria displayed higher resistance of >45% to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline. Among gram-positive bacteria, a higher resistance rate with ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxacillin, vancomycin, and penicillin G was recorded. S. aureus showed no resistance to rifampicin and clindamycin, and Strep. spp. indicated 100% resistance to rifampicin and vancomycin. This study highlights critical gaps and areas for further exploration. Expanding the spectrum of antibiotics tested and investigating underlying multidrug resistance mechanisms would...

Investigating refugees ’ negotiation of professional possible selves
AbstractMany barriers threaten refugees ’ professional and social integration in their resettlement countries. Through semi-structured interviews and based on the concept of possible selves, we aimed to understand how 22 refugees aged from 18 to 35 and coming from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, Somalia, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, and Yemen co nstructed and negotiated their career plans considering contextual factors. Results show that forced migration impacted the participants in three different ways: some were still striving for the ideal, pursuing their ideal career plans, while others were revising them either by revisiting...

Subjective health status and health literacy of African refugees and asylum seekers in Germany: a cross-sectional survey
Anika Christin Bäumel, Alexandra Sauter, Andrea Weber, Michael Leitzmann, Carmen Jochem International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- Many refugees and asylum seekers in Germany experience a high disease burden and low health literacy. The current study aims to focus on assessing these issues among African refugees and asylum seekers in Bavaria, Germany. The authors evaluated their self-perceived health status and health literacy, and identified barriers and gaps in health care utilization, intending to improve health care services for this group. The authors con...

Evaluation of larvicidal potential of Eritrean medicinal plants against Aedes aegypti
AbstractLarvicidal activity of three Eritrean medicinal plants was evaluated againstAedes aegypti by conducting the bioassay using WHO methods. Efficacy of the plant extracts ofO. hadiense, R. officinalis andC. spinarum was evaluated against 3rd instarAedes aegypti larvae and mortality was recorded. LC50 and LC90 of the various plant extracts were also calculated using probit analysis. The morphological analysis of treated larvae was also performed. Extracts ofO. hadiense, C. spinarium andR. officinalis were prepared using different solvents viz chloroform, 70% ethanol and water. Of the screened extracts, the chloroform ex...

Understanding Access and Utilization of Healthcare Services Among African Immigrant Women in the United States: the Application of Health Belief Model
AbstractAfrican immigrants in the U.S. are among the most economically and socially disadvantaged groups, with minimal access to healthcare and disproportionate adverse health outcomes. This qualitative study used the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explore how various health-related beliefs shape African immigrant women ’s healthcare access, with a particular focus on Ethiopian immigrant women. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 Ethiopian immigrant women who lived in six U.S. states and Washington DC, recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted using Nvivo12 software, a nd the th...

Epidemiology of < i > Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato < /i > in the Greater Horn of Africa: A systematic review
ConclusionsWe confirm thatE.granulosus s.l. is prevalent throughout the GHA. Nevertheless, despite our efforts to screen grey literature, an accurate assessment of the epidemiology in GHA remains challenging, due to the lack of combined host, in-depth risk factor and behavioural studies, as well as the wide diversity in subpopulations studied and diagnostic tools used. Interdisciplinary and transboundary partnerships would be essential for the design of effective control strategies, tuned to the GHA setting. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Genomic transmission clusters and circulating lineages of Mycobacterium tuberculosis among refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: Four lineages (L1, L3, L4, and L9) were identified, with the majority of strains being L3, reflecting the Mtb L3 dominance in South Sudan, where the majority of refugees originated from. Recent transmission among refugees was relatively low (24%), likely due to the short study period. The improved understanding of the Mtb transmission dynamics using WGS in refugee camps could assist in designing effective TB control programs for refugees.PMID:38008242 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105530 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)
