Enterobius vermicularis Infestation Mimicking Rectal Malignancy
Abstract Enterobius vermicularis is a common intestinal nematode of humans that can be considered relatively harmless. A polypoid lesion mimicking malignancy was detected in the rectum of a 66-year-old female patient who had been operated for sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma in the past. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed no malignancy but there was adult E. vermicularis nematodes and eggs. In this case report, we aimed to present an enterobiasis infestation that produces non-necrotizing granuloma tissue in the rectum. Synthesis and efficacy of pyrvinium-inspired analogs against tuberculosis and malaria pathogens.
Abstract Herein, we report the synthesis and evaluation of pyrvinium-based antimalarial and antitubercular compounds. Pyrvinium is an FDA approved drug for the treatment of pinworm infection, and it has been reported to have antiparasitic and antimicrobial activities. Pyrvinium contains quinoline core coupled with pyrrole. We replaced the pyrrole with various aryl or heteroaryl substituents to generate pyrvinium analogs. The profiling of these compounds against malaria parasite P. falciparum 3D7 revealed analogs with better antimalarial activity than pyrvinium pamoate. Compound 14 and 16 showed IC50 of 23Â...

Successful Resolution of Recurrent Vaginal Pinworm Infection With Intermittent Albendazole Administration
We describe the case of a 7-year-old girl with repeated vaginal Enterobius vermicularis infection, never detected as a digestive tract infection. Two-dose pyrantel pamoate or 2-dose albendazole could not suppress recurrence. Finally, 3-dose albendazole after 2-week intervals was successful in preventing relapse. Pinworm Infection at Salmon Ruins and Aztec Ruins: Relation to Pueblo III Regional Violence.
Authors: Reinhard KJ, Camacho M Abstract The study of coprolites has been a theme of archaeology in the American Southwest. A feature of archaeoparasitology on the Colorado Plateau is the ubiquity of pinworm infection. As a crowd parasite, this ubiquity signals varying concentrations of populations. Our recent analysis of coprolite deposits from 2 sites revealed the highest prevalence of infection ever recorded for the region. For Salmon Ruins, the deposits date from AD 1140 to 1280. For Aztec Ruins, the samples can be dated by artifact association between AD 1182-1253. Both sites can be placed in the Ance...

Confusing a Pollen Grain with a Parasite Egg: an Appraisal of "Paleoparasitological Evidence of Pinworm (Enterobius Vermicularis) Infection in a Female Adolescent Residing in Ancient Tehran".
Authors: Camacho M, Reinhard KJ Abstract There is often the risk of confusing pollen grains with helminth eggs from archaeological sites. Thousands to millions of pollen grains can be recovered from archaeological burial sediments that represent past ritual, medication and environment. Some pollen grain types can be similar to parasite eggs. Such a confusion is represented by the diagnosis of enterobiasis in ancient Iran. The authors of this study confused a joint-pine (Ephedra spp.) pollen grain with a pinworm egg. This paper describes the specific Ephedra pollen morphology that can be confused with pinwo...

Papular eruption on UV-exposed skin in a 7-year-old boy caused by Enterobius vermicularis infection.
We present the case of a 7-year-old boy with sudden onset of pruritic erythemato-squamous confluent papules and plaques on UV-exposed skin, caused by proven enterobiasis. To our understanding, this is the first case of photodermatosis-like dermatitis caused by enterobiasis reported in the literature. Preschool girl with vaginal bleeding due to pinworm endometritis
Genital tract bleeding in prepubertal girls is a rare clinical condition, which can occur for multiple reasons. It frequently generates anxiety in the family and in health care professionals. A thorough anamnesis and careful genital inspection can give important diagnostic hints; however, there are cases in which the cause remains doubtful and a complete gynecological evaluation (including cultures and vaginoscopy) is necessary. Therefore, the attending physician should always consider less frequent diagnoses in order to perform the necessary studies in a sequential and rational manner. Pinworms of the red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) in Colombia: gathering the pieces of the pinworm-primate puzzle
Publication date: Available online 4 December 2019Source: International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and WildlifeAuthor(s): Brenda Solórzano-García, Andrés Link Ospina, Silvia Rondón, Gerardo Pérez-Ponce de LeónAbstractPinworms of primates are believed to be highly host specific parasites, forming co-evolutionary associations with their hosts. In order to assess the strength and reach of such evolutionary links, we need to have a broad understanding of the pinworm diversity associated with primates. Here, we employed an integrative taxonomic approach to assess pinworm diversity in red howler monkeys in Colombi...

Complex and Diverse Drivers of Parasite Loads in a Cosmopolitan Insect.
We examined several potential determinants of pinworm infection in wild Australian cockroaches (Periplaneta australasiae) from multiple biological scales: (1) habitat; (2) season; (3) cockroach body size, developmental stage, and sex; and (4) interactions between 2 pinworm species (Leidynema appendiculata and Thelastoma sp.). Over 1 yr, we collected 239 cockroaches from 2 separate rooms in an Illinois greenhouse. We used generalized linear mixed-effects models (GLMMs) to evaluate simultaneously the influence of these factors on pinworm abundance, and nearly all had significant effects. Overall, the abundance of L. appendic...

Unusual Etiology for Transaminitis
We report the case of a 37-year-old man who presented to the gastroenterology clinic with abdominal pain and was found to have elevated transaminases. Workup for acute/chronic liver disease was unrevealing. He underwent endoscopic evaluation showing a live pinworm in the colon. He was treated with albendazole with improvement in GI symptoms and resolution of his transaminitis. There are scarce reports in the literature describing pathognomonic, clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings for pinworm infection. Here, we attempt to review the literature for hepatic involvement with an enterobius infection and discuss the find...

Findings in Appendectomies with Enterobius vermicularis Infection: Pinworm Is Not A Cause of Appendicitis
Conclusion: While E. vermicularis infection appears to be an incidental finding in appendectomies rather than being a cause of appendicitis, it probably stimulates LH which may mimic acute appendicitis clinically. PMID: 30938128 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Turkish Society for Parasitology)
