Mesoporous silica-stabilized magnetite nanoparticles with peroxidase-like activities for sensitively detecting cholesterol in animal-derived foods
In this study, an elegant approach utilizing inorganic nanozyme-based magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) for the highly sensitive detection of cholesterol in animal-derived food products was reported. The results revealed the fabricated MMSNs exhibited remarkably intrinsic peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activities with improved affinity, and the catalytic behavior aligned well with Michaelis-Menten equation. In addition, the data indicated that the MMSNs enabled visual colorimetric detection of cholesterol with a remarkably low detection limit of 7.12 μM by combining catalytic oxidation with cholesterol oxi...

Effect of crocin supplementation in the extender on the quality of chilled canine semen
Anim Reprod Sci. 2023 Nov 8;259:107374. doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2023.107374. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of crocin on canine sperm quality parameters during prolonged storage at 4 °C. Ejaculates from 10 dogs were diluted in a TRIS- egg yolk extender supplemented with 0 (control group), 0.5, 1, and 2 mM crocin and stored at 4 °C. Sperm membrane functional integrity, motility, and kinetics were assessed after 3 h, 24 h, 4 days and 7 days of storage. Based on the results, the more efficient concentration of crocin (0.5 mM) was chosen to evaluate sperm intracellular ROS l...

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances in commercial organic eggs via fishmeal in feed
Chemosphere. 2023 Nov 7:140553. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140553. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChicken eggs can be a significant source of human PFAS exposure. A survey of PFAS in commercial eggs from larger farms across Denmark showed the absence or low contents of PFAS in free-range and barn eggs. However, organic eggs from eight farms collected in September 2022 had a similar profile of nine PFASs with a predominance of odd over even carbon length PFCAs. Farm 11-13 e.g. had egg yolk ng/g concentrations of PFOA 0.07 ± 0.02; PFNA 0.37 ± 0.04; PFDA 0.13 ± 0.00; PFUnDA 0.22 ± 0.04; PFDoDA 0.06 ± 0.02; PFTrDA 0.1...

Production and characterization of egg yolk antibodies against the ZIKV NS2B expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Nov 3;125(Pt A):111088. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.111088. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) and its associated neonatal and congenital complications pose a threat to global health, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions with co-circulation of related flaviviruses and intense vector proliferation. Diagnosis of ZIKV by RT-PCR is limited to the viraemic phase and is not always accessible in low-income tropical settings, while serological tests often show cross-reactivity with other flaviviruses. Given the similarity of ZIKV symptoms to those of other arboviru...

Effects of hyaluronic acid on sperm parameters, mitochondrial function  and apoptosis of spermatozoa in Simmental bulls with good and poor freezing ability
AbstractBulls with varying freezability exhibit substantial variation in semen characteristics after cryopreservation. Sperm freezability is positively correlated with membrane cholesterol content, membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity  and antioxidant content. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA) in bull sperm with different cryotolerances. Simmental bulls (n = 10) semen samples were taken and categorized based on their progressive motility (PM) after freeze-thawing: Group I, consisting of bulls (n = 5) with progressive sperm motility ≥45%, was consid...

Cryopreservation efficiency of red-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) sperm obtained from different origins through epididymal retrograde flushing or electroejaculation
This study investigated whether the origin of sperm (epididymal vs. ejaculate) affects the cryopreservation efficiency in agouti (Dasyprocta leporina). Five sexually mature agoutis underwent electroejaculation, resulting in obtaining four semen samples. After 15 days, the same animals were euthanized, and through retrograde flushing, sperm samples were obtained from the epididymis tails. In both collection methods, samples were evaluated for sperm parameters (sperm concentration, motility, vigor, membrane integrity, osmotic response, and morphology). Then, samples were diluted in ACP 109c, added with 20% egg yolk, and a fi...
