Incomes to Outcomes: A Global Assessment of Disparities in Cleft and Craniofacial Treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Delays in cleft and craniofacial surgical treatment are consistently identified with high-level evidence among non-White and publicly-insured families in HICs. Multiple tactics to facilitate patient access and adapt multi-disciplinary case in austere settings are reported from LMICs. Future efforts including those sharing tactics among HICs and LMICs hold promise to help mitigate barriers to care.PMID:38700320 | DOI:10.1177/10556656241249821 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Associations between subjective social status and predictors of interest in genetic testing among women diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age
CONCLUSION: To develop interventions to improve genetic knowledge, researchers should consider the social status and contexts of women diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age (or before 40 years old) to ensure equity in the distribution of genetic testing benefits.PMID:38700724 | DOI:10.1007/s10552-024-01878-0 (Source: Cancer Control)

App-based support for breast cancer patients to reduce psychological distress during therapy and survivorship - a multicentric randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Patients with breast cancer suffer from psychological problems including anxiety and depression during and after therapy. Personalized, supportive care with the app PINK! Coach turned out as a promising opportunity to significantly improve psychological distress in a convenient, accessible, and low-threshold manner for breast cancer patients independent of their stage of disease (EBC/MBC), therapy phase (aftercare or therapy) or therapy itself (chemotherapy/other therapy options). The app is routinely available in Germany as a DiGA. Clinical Trial Registration: DRKS Trial Registry (DRKS00028699).PMID:38699636 |...

Mechanisms of Bacterial Drug Resistance with Special Emphasis on Phenotypic and Molecular Characterization of Extended Spectrum Beta-lactamase
New Microbiol. 2024 May;47(1):1-14.ABSTRACTAntibiotics are designed to effectively treat bacterial infections while minimizing harm to the human body. They work by targeting specific components of bacteria or by disrupting essential processes such as cell wall synthesis, membrane function, protein production, and metabolic pathways. However, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of drug resistance in humans, animals, and agriculture, contributing to the global spread of this problem. Drug resistance can be either innate or acquired, with acquired resistance involving changes in the bacterial chrom...

Current Applications of VR/AR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality) in Pediatric Neurosurgery
Adv Tech Stand Neurosurg. 2024;49:19-34. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-42398-7_2.ABSTRACTNeurosurgical procedures are some of the most complex procedures in medicine and since the advent of the field, planning, performing, and learning them has challenged the neurosurgeon. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are making these challenges more manageable. VR refers to a virtual digital environment that can be experienced usually through use of stereoscopic glasses and controllers. AR, on the other hand, fuses the natural environment with virtual images, such as superimposing a preoperative MRI image on to the surgical fi...

Trends in the Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder in California: Disparities by Sociodemographic Factors and Region Between 1990-2018
This study examines ASD trends from 1990 to 2018 in California (CA), focusing on sociodemographic factors that may inform policy/interventions. Using CA Department of Public Health birth records (1990-2018) and Developmental Services ASD cases (1994-2022), we analyzed diagnosis incidence by age 4 or 8, stratified by sociodemographic and regional factors. From 1990 to 2018, for each birth year the cumulative incidence of ASD by 4 and 8 years of age in CA increased while the diagnosis age decreased. Distinct patterns emerged over these three decades. Children born to White and Asian and Pacific Islander (API) mothers, or to ...

The Incidence of Winged Scapula after Thoracic Cancer Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: The incidence of WS was similar to the literature. As WS incidence is underdiagnosed, assessment and correct education about possible deficits or impairments should be improved. Moreover, when a minimally invasive approach is not planned, it is a good clinical practice to discuss surgical strategies with surgeons to reduce this deficit.PMID:38698601 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1786196 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Terrorist attacks against healthcare facilities involving hostages
This study shows that terrorist attacks against healthcare facilities that involve -hostage-taking have increased in frequency over the past 10 years and have global reach. Systems may still be underprepared for this potentially increasing phenomenon and require preparedness plans with education and simulated practice in place. Healthcare facilities should consider mitigation strategies such as preparedness drills and additional education.PMID:38698512 | DOI:10.5055/ajdm.0478 (Source: American Journal of Disaster Medicine)
