Using case-based learning supported by role-playing situational teaching method in endocrine physiology education
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/advan.00232.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmbedding clinically relevant learning experience to basic science subjects is desired for the preclinical phase of the undergraduate medical education. The present study aims to modify case-based learning (CBL) with role-playing situational teaching method and assess the student feedback and learning effect. 176 sophomore students majoring in clinical medicine from Harbin Medical University were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (n=90) who received the traditional hybrid teaching, and the experimental group (n=86),...

Leveraging digital assets: lessons from a 14-year-old isotope tracer course for professional scientists
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/advan.00073.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent policies (e.g., social distancing, travel restrictions) challenged both organizers for and attendees of programs typically held in-person. Many scientific training programs quickly adapted to virtual formats by incorporating digital assets developed for virtual learning and remote social engagement. At the outset, the value of continuing digital elements with future in-person events was unclear. To examine how virtual resources supported heterogeneous professional training programs, we reviewed su...

Why ask why? Toward coordinating knowledge of proximate and ultimate explanations in physiology
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/advan.00057.2022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn physiology education, students must learn to recognize and construct causal explanations. This proves difficult, in part, because causal explanations in biology manifest in different varieties. Unlike other natural sciences, causal mechanisms in physiology support physiological functions and reflect biological adaptations. Therefore, students must distinguish between questions that prompt a proximate or an ultimate explanation. In the present investigation, we aimed to determine how these different varieties of students' knowledge...

Prevalence of Positive Childhood Experiences Among Adults - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Four States, 2015-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 May 2;73(17):399-404. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7317a3.ABSTRACTPositive childhood experiences (PCEs) promote optimal health and mitigate the effects of adverse childhood experiences, but PCE prevalence in the United States is not well-known. Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, this study describes the prevalence of individual and cumulative PCEs among adults residing in four states: Kansas (2020), Montana (2019), South Carolina (2020), and Wisconsin (2015). Cumulative PCE scores were calculated by summing affirmative responses to seven questions. Subscores were created for fami...

Transport accessibility and hospital attributes: A nonlinear analysis of their impact on Women's prenatal care seeking behavior
This study, based on a substantial Wuhan dataset (23,947 samples), investigates factors influencing prenatal care-seeking, focusing on transport accessibility and hospital attributes. Findings indicate a nuanced relationship: (1) A non-linear trend, resembling an inverted "U," reveals the complex interplay between transport accessibility, hospital attributes, and prenatal care visits. Hospital attributes have a more pronounced impact than transport accessibility. (2) Interaction analysis underscores that lower prenatal care visits relate to low-income and education levels, despite reasonable public transport accessibility....

The importance of the development of extracorporeal life support simulation centres for improving skills and knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The development of a simulation-based education centre was found to be an invaluable achievement that enabled not only successful standardised training and testing of novel or previously accepted procedures, but also the upgrading of technical skills, even in the challenging COVID-19 pandemic period.PMID:38693985 | PMC:PMC11059022 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138522 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Anemia and Associated Factors among Public Elementary School Children in Asella Town, Southeast Ethiopia: A Facility-Based Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: Anemia among school-age children was found to be a mild public health problem. Uneducated mothers, intestinal parasite infections, and underweight children were found to be determinants of anemia among school-age children. Health professionals should provide health education for mothers about child-feeding practices and the consumption of dietary sources of iron.PMID:38694783 | PMC:PMC11062769 | DOI:10.1155/2024/1519382 (Source: Anemia)

Probiotic formulations and gastro-intestinal diseases in the paediatric population: a narrative review
CONCLUSION: This study concludes that single-organism and composite probiotics are effective complementary therapies for treating gastrointestinal disorders in the pediatric population. Hence, healthcare professionals should consider using probiotics in standard treatment regimens, and educating guardians can enhance the benefits of probiotic therapy. Further research is recommended to identify the optimal strains and dosages for specific conditions and demographics. The integration of probiotics in clinical practice and ongoing research can contribute to reducing the incidence and severity of gastrointestinal disorders in...

Social support and psychological adjustment: A quantitative synthesis of 60 meta-analyses
Am Psychol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1037/amp0001323. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSocial support is the degree to which people are accepted by, cared for, and attended to by important others and is one of the most popular constructs in the psychological canon. This project synthesized data from 60 meta-analyses, which included over 2,700 studies and 2.1 million participants, to evaluate the association of social support with psychological adjustment. Results from a second-order meta-analysis indicated that, overall, social support yielded a robust association with psychological adjustment, r = .24, 95% CI [.22, .26]. Effects ...

General practice nurse perceptions of barriers and facilitators to implementation of best-practice dementia care recommendations-a qualitative interview study
CONCLUSION: This study identified several factors that need addressing to support general practice nurses to integrate best-practice dementia care recommendations into daily clinical practice. The development of interventions needs to include strategies to mitigate potential barriers and enhance facilitators that they perceive impact on their delivery of best-practice care for people living with dementia and their carer(s). The knowledge gained in this study could be used to develop multi-faceted interventions informed by theoretical implementation change models to enable the general practice nurse to operationalise best-p...

Factors associated with adherence to the COVID-19 vaccine in pregnant women
CONCLUSION: there was evidence of low adherence to the vaccination schedule against COVID-19 during the gestational period, considering the number of recommended doses and the interval between them. Therefore, professionals in their clinical practice must make pregnant women aware of the importance of immunization and compliance with the vaccination schedule.BACKGROUND: (1) Maternal vaccination plays a significant role in preventing and combating maternal morbidity. (2) Some factors may influence acceptance or hesitancy of the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. (3) Safety regarding the effectiveness of vaccination against ...
