Prevalence of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in a cohort of sudden cardiac death patients undergoing autopsy
CONCLUSIONS: The combined rate of PFO and ASD in a cohort of 517 patients undergoing autopsy was 7.9 %. None of these patients had experienced a cerebrovascular accident. This rate of PFOs appears lower than earlier reports and raises the possibility that the relative risk of an associated stroke could be higher than previously estimated.PMID:37734655 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.09.006 (Source: Journal of Cardiology)

Epidemiology of pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest compared with adults
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is associated with approximately 90% mortality rate. In the pediatric population, this would equate to a large number of years of life lost, posing a heavy medical and economic burden to society. (Source: Heart Rhythm)

Prevalence of illicit drug use in young patients with sudden cardiac death
Illicit drug use may accelerate coronary disease and cardiac hypertrophy or stimulate arrhythmias. Rates of illicit drug use in young patients with sudden cardiac death (SCD) are uncertain. (Source: Heart Rhythm)

Anti-GABA-A Receptor Antibody-Mediated Epilepsia Partialis Continua After Treatment With Alemtuzumab: A Case Report
We present a young woman with prediagnosis of relapse remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), treated with interferons, natalizumab, and alemtuzumab. Six months after one and only cycle of alemtuzumab, speech arrest and behavioral changes with aggressive and anxious traits appeared. She showed increasing motor convulsions resulting in focal status epilepticus.RESULTS: Anti-GABA-A receptor antibodies in CSF and serum were confirmed in different external laboratories, in a more extensive analysis after antibodies against NMDAR, CASPR2, LGI1, GABABR, and AMPAR were ruled out during in-house examination. Clinical condition improved...

Mortality and disability-adjusted life years in motorcyclists in Latin America and the Caribbean during the first decade of action for road safetyMortalidad y a ños de vida ajustados por discapacidad de los motociclistas en América Latina y el Caribe en la primera década de seguridad vial
CONCLUSIONS: The data underscore the importance of developing surveillance actions aimed at preventing motorcycle accidents, since the observed declining rates are still insufficient to address the morbidity and mortality associated with road accidents as a public health problem.PMID:37066130 | PMC:PMC10100995 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.68 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)
