It ’s the relationship...
Many, maybe most people believe that therapists “do” something which makes patients feel better because it is hard to believe that it is the relationship between the therapist and the patient which is the healing factor. If I go to the dentist because I have pain in my mouth and the dentist doesn't help, I likely will seek help elsewhere, and that seems reasonable. But I look to the dentist to *do* something to make me feel better. The dentist does not usually, at least in acute situations, require of me that I do more than be cooperative and hold my mouth open. But psychotherapy is a different thing altogether. Therapi...

Podcast: A Bipolar and a Schizophrenic Get Triggered by a Movie
We all realize that movies are fiction, but that doesn’t mean that we should take nothing seriously. When a movie makes a portrayal of an individual, for example, that’s full of racial stereotypes, we’re justified in saying that it isn’t okay.  It’s no different for portrayals of mental illness. In this episode, Gabe and Michelle discuss just such a portrayal in a movie that Michelle found highly offensive. Listen to see if you agree. SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW “This is just another way to dismiss our feelings.” – Gabe Howard   Highlights From ‘Schizophrenia in th...

The Language of Organic Chemistry
ConclusionAn array of powerful tools awaits problems that can be recast in terms of computational linguistics. But as the work highlighted here shows, finding the right interface and working at scale could prove tricky. Nevertheless, maximum common substructure has been established as a linguistic unit in organic chemistry, and as such could offer a roadmap for travellers wanting to make the journey. How to divorce your dentist
Why did primitive people who had no toothbrushes, fluoridated toothpaste, dental floss, or dentists have almost no tooth decay? Enter the seeds of grasses–grains–and tooth decay exploded. Just look at dental health through the Middle Ages, 17th, 18th, 19th centuries: dental health was a huge public health problems along with cholera and goiters. Dig Deep to Source Pain In Person Living With Dementia
Photo credit Hermes Rivera Dear Carol:  My mom was recently diagnosed with vascular dementia and likely Alzheimer’s and has become increasingly confused when she tries to explain something to us so we don’t know what to think. Two years ago she had a root canal and seemed to weather the dental work well, but now she’s having pain that she says is coming from that location. The dentist who did the surgery took X-rays and sees no reason for the pain, and a second dentist agreed, but my mother continues to complain. Read the full column on Inforum about ways to search out the source of pain in someone living with ...

Bad breath: What causes it and what to do about it
Almost everyone experiences bad breath once in a while. But for some people, bad breath is a daily problem, and they struggle to find a solution. Approximately 30% of the population complains of some sort of bad breath. Halitosis (Latin for “bad breath”) often occurs after a garlicky meal or in the morning after waking. Other causes of temporary halitosis include some beverages (including alcoholic drinks or coffee) and tobacco smoking. Some people may not be aware of their own halitosis and learn about it from a relative, friend, or coworker, causing some degree of discomfort and distress. In severe cases, bad breath ...

Got a Minute? Then You Have Time to Create!
One of the biggest reasons many of us don’t create, and in particular write, is because we don’t have time. We’re working and parenting and cooking and dish-washing. We’re commuting, and dropping off and picking up. And we think we need to carve out at least 20 minutes to sit down and reconnect to our imagination. And somehow those 20 minutes get eaten up by other activities before we even realize it. However, all you really need to access your creativity is a minute. Yes, just 1 minute. Which means that you can write while standing in line at the grocery store or waiting for the dentist to call your name. You can ...

Private Specialty Practices Get Gobbled Up
(see:Dealmaking stayed hot in 2018, with a focus on physician practices)This year, buyers hungry for acquisitions paid particular attention to specialty practices in such areas as orthopedics, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology and dentistry. Primary care is in strong demand, too. As far as who is buying practices, it's a three-way race between the old hats —health systems—plus private equity firms and, a relatively new entrant: payers. UnitedHealth Group's OptumCare has been particularly aggressive about buying physician practices as part of its strategy to get as close to consumers as possible. But Cen...

Medgadget Sci-Fi Contest 2018: Meet The Authors and Read Their Stories
From Jules Verne to Isaac Asimov, science fiction writers have inspired scientists, explorers, and thrill seekers to influence the future of humanity. While Sci-Fi may seem like it’s about the distant future, more often than not it’s commentary on rudimentary technologies that already exist and that are about to mature and reveal their true potential. The authors of this year’s Medgadget Sci-Fi Writing Contest are certainly in tune with the latest trends in biomedicine, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical practice, and genetic manipulation taking place in thousands of labs aroun...

The Global Impact of Health IT – #HITsm Chat Topic
We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 11/30 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Vanessa Carter (@_FaceSA) on the topic of “The Global Impact of Health IT”. Global health pandemics like antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance are among the most critical issues to tackle and in future will require robust, harmonious data surveillance systems along with mass co-operation between the animal, human and environmental health sectors across every country [1]. This is known as One Health [2]. WHO initiatives like GLASS (Global Antimicrob...

A cold is almost never just a cold …
So much to do, so little time. And I wasn’t supposed to get a COUGH again, either. No, I’m not kidding. I know where I was infected. To make a very long story short, exactly a week ago I accompanied a friend (who has very little Italian) and her 5-year-old daughter to a pediatric dentist. We had to wait for a couple of hours (the dentist was very busy and behind schedule) in a small, airless waiting room with other adults and their…kids. Yes, I’m well aware of the danger of my being around potentially ill kids, especially in a situation like that where I couldn’t escape, but my friend needed m...
