Multi-gene panel testing and association analysis in Cypriot breast cancer cases and controls
Conclusion: This study provides population-based prevalence and gene-specific risk estimates for protein-truncating and rare missense variants. These results may have important clinical implications for women who undergo genetic testing and be pivotal for a substantial proportion of breast cancer patients in Cyprus.PMID:37790698 | PMC:PMC10544326 | DOI:10.3389/fgene.2023.1248492 (Source: Cancer Control)

Comparative genomic characterization of indigenous fat ‐tailed Akkaraman sheep with local and transboundary sheep breeds
AbstractThe domestic sheep with over 1200 breeds descended from those early domesticated animals that are bred for a variety of resources such as meat, milk and wool. Akkaraman, a fat-tailed indigenous sheep breed of T ürkiye, is widespread throughout Central Anatolia, with the largest indigenous sheep population. Assessing the genetic diversity and genomic structure of animal breeds is among the key contributors to deciphering adaptation to environmental extremes and constructing efficient genetic improvement st rategies. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the genome of Akkaraman breed against various world-reno...

Residues of veterinary antibiotics in manures from pig and chicken farms in a context of antimicrobial use reduction by implementation of health and welfare plans
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 26:117242. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117242. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of antibiotics in food-producing animals can induce the presence of residual substances in manure, which are then released into the environment and may contribute to soil and groundwater contamination. During the on-farm implementation of strategies to improve animal health and welfare in chicken and pig farms, the consequences of antibiotic use were evaluated in terms of the occurrence and levels of antibiotic residues in manure. A set of 35 broiler farms from Cyprus, Greece, the Netherlands and 40 pig farms from Fran...

The seasonal variation of ambient gamma radiation dose rate and health risk assessment in North Coast, Mediterranean Sea
AbstractIn this research, the seasonal variations of ambient gamma radiation dose rate and the outdoor gamma radiation risk in the northeast location of Cyprus were investigated by means of an Ion Chamber Survey Meter. The ambient gamma radiation was measured at 100 cm above ground level. The average value of measured ambient gamma dose was 135 nGyh−1, 185 nGyh−1, 187 nGyh−1 and 191 nGyh−1 in winter, autumn, spring, and summer, respectively. The excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) values at the tested sites were higher than the worldwide average. (Source: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry)

The dyadic regulation approach of coping and illness representations in female cancer patients and their partners
Front Psychol. 2023 Sep 6;14:1194900. doi: 10.3389/fpsyg.2023.1194900. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Adjustment to any illness is a 'dyadic' process whereby patients and their partners mutually determine each other's perceptions, behaviours, and well-being. The present study explored the association between dyadic coping strategies and illness representations in newly diagnosed female cancer patients and their partners.METHODS: The sample consisted of 92 female cancer patient-partner pairs from 3 oncology hospitals in Greece and Cyprus. The Actor Partner Interdependence Model was applied to test for dyadic regulation e...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6826: Development of the Refugees and Asylum Seekers Occupational Satisfaction (RASOS) Assessment Tool
This study led to the development of the pilot version of the Refugees and Asylum Seekers Occupational Satisfaction (RASOS), which can also be used to identify underlying personal and environmental factors that contribute to self-perceived low satisfaction. A future quantitative study is required to establish the psychometric properties of the tool. (Source: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health)

Health, stress, and urbanism in the Hellenistic –Roman metropolis of Nea Paphos, Cyprus: A comparative analysis
This study is one of the first to investigate urbanism and health in ancient Cyprus, with focus on the Hellenistic –Roman periods. The comparison of the two sites provides new insights into the health of Hellenistic–Roman Cypriot populations, enabling future investigation and comparison between urban–rural regional and neighboring sites. Spinal muscular atrophy type I associated with a novel SMN1 splicing variant that disrupts the expression of the functional transcript
DiscussionWe verified the occurrence of a non-deletion SMN1 variant and supported its pathogenicity, thus expanding the SMN1 variants spectrum. We discuss the updated SMA genetic findings in the Cypriot population, highlighting an increased percentage of intragenic variants compared to other populations. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Which is more important, foreign direct investment inflow or outflow, on the pollution of European Union countries? Evidence from Panel Fourier symmetric and asymmetric causality
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29821-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUncertainty remains regarding the impact of foreign direct investments on countries' environmental policies and pollution levels. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between foreign direct investment inflows, outflows, and carbon dioxide emissions for EU (European Union) member states. Accordingly, the data for the period 1993-2019 were subjected to the Panel Fourier symmetric and asymmetric causality tests for 21 EU countries. According to the Panel Fourier symmetric causality test results, the effect of for...
