Medical News Today: What is the normal chloride level?
The chloride levels in the blood should be 96 and 106 milliequivalents per liter (MEq/L). High levels indicate hyperchloremia, while low levels indicate hypochloremia. These conditions can have many causes including severe dehydration. Treatment depends on the individual cause but may involve rehydrating. Learn more. (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

EPA Releases New Rules for TSCA Asbestos Review
As part of the latest updates to the reformed Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week proposed new rules for the risk evaluation of asbestos. The EPA released a significant new use rule (SNUR) proposal which would allow the agency to prevent new uses of asbestos, the naturally occurring mineral linked to deadly cancers such as mesothelioma. It is the first time the EPA has issued such an action. The SNUR would require the agency’s approval before asbestos-containing goods can be manufactured, imported or processed. It would grant the EPA power to evaluate the intended...

Can cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome be fatal?
shutterstock.com/Stanimir G. Stoev 2.5 out of 5 stars Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: Reports of Fatal Cases. Nourbakhsh M et al. J Forensic Sci 2018 May 15 [Epub ahead of print] Abstract This paper reports on 2 fatal cases that the authors argue were attributable to the effects of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). CASE #1: A 27-year-old woman is brought to hospital by ambulance after friend found her unresponsive with agonal respirations. On arrival she was apneic with bradycardia and decorticate posturing. Pupils were fixed and dilated. Serum glucose was 34 mg/dL. After presentation she deteriorated and could ...

Chemical compound produces beneficial inflammation, remyelination that could help treat MS
(University of California - Riverside) Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, report that indazole chloride, a synthetic compound that acts on one form of the body's estrogen receptors, is able to remyelinate (add new myelin to) damaged axons and alter the body's immune system -- findings that could help treat multiple sclerosis. Drugs available to treat MS alter the immune system but do not induce repair of damaged axons. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of enamides enabled by single-electron reduction
Identifying catalyst activation modes that exploit one-electron chemistry and overcome associated deactivation pathways will be transformative for developing first-row transition metal catalysts with performance equal or, ideally, superior to precious metals. Here we describe a zinc-activation method compatible with high-throughput reaction discovery that identified scores of cobalt-phosphine combinations for the asymmetric hydrogenation of functionalized alkenes. An optimized catalyst prepared from (R,R)-Ph-BPE {Ph-BPE, 1,2-bis[(2R,5R)-2,5-diphenylphospholano]ethane} and cobalt chloride [CoCl2·6H2O] exhibited high ...
