Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2022 Jun 10;64:e42. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202264042. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTQ fever is a major public health problem in French Guiana. In recent years, a considerable number of cases has been reported in French Guiana's penitentiary center. The main objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of these cases. A retrospective study was conducted at the prison to identify cases of acute Q fever in people incarcerated between 2010 and 2021. During the study period, 16 patients were diagnosed with acute Q fever. The positivity rate varied between 13 and 57%. The annual incidence rate...

High endemicity of Q fever in French Guiana: A cross sectional study (2007 –2017)
The objective of this study was to update the incidence and epidemiological data on QF in FG. A retrospective study of all FG Q fever serodiagnosis betwe en 2007 and 2017 was carried out. Among the 695 patients included, the M/F sex-ratio was 2.0 and the median age of 45.3 years (IQR 33.7–56.3). The annual QF incidence rate was 27.4 cases (95%CI: 7.1–47.7) per 100,000 inhabitants ranging from 5.2 in 2007 to 40.4 in 2010. Risk factors associated w ith Q fever compared to general population were male gender, being born in mainland France an age between 30 to 59 years-old and a residence in Cayenne and surroundings. The i...

A New Therapeutic Approach for Dystussia and Atussia in Neurogenic Dysphagia: Effect of Aerosolized Capsaicin on Peak Cough Flow
AbstractSwallowing and cough are crucial components of airway protection. In patients with neurogenic dysphagia (ND), there is a high prevalence of dystussia (impaired cough) and atussia (absence of cough). As a result, the ability to detect and remove aspirated material from the airway decreases, exacerbating the sequelae associated with ND, including aspiration pneumonia, a leading cause of mortality in ND. This controlled intervention study aimed to quantify the cough response to aerosolized capsaicin (AC) in patients with ND and assess the potential of AC as a therapeutic tool in treating ND-related dystussia and atuss...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 2090: Pilot-Scale Optimization of Supercritical CO2 Extraction of Dry Paprika Capsicum annuum: Influence of Operational Conditions and Storage on Extract Composition
trzewa Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was used to extract carotenoids from dry paprika Capsicum annuum. Studies regarding the effect of process parameters, including pressure (25–45 MPa), temperature (40–60 °C), and time (10–110 min), were carried out using response surface methodology. It was found that under optimal conditions (pressure of 45 MPa, temperature of 50 °C, and time of 74 min), the extract yield was 10.05%, and the total content of carotenoids in the extract was 4.21%, in good agreement with the predicted values (10.24% and 4.24%, ...

Prior Carriage Predicts Intensive Care Unit Infections Caused by Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2022 Jan 10:tpmd201436. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.20-1436. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntensive care unit-acquired infection (ICU-AI) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) carriage are a major concern worldwide. Our objective was to investigate the impact of ESBL-PE carriage on ICU-AI. Our study is prospective, observational, and noninterventional. It was conducted over a 5-year period (Jan 2013-Dec 2017) in the medical-surgical intensive care unit of the Cayenne General Hospital (French Amazonia). During the study period, 1,340 patients were included, 271 (20.2%) develo...

Microorganisms in Whole Botanical Fermented Foods Survive Processing and Simulated Digestion to Affect Gut Microbiota Composition
Botanical fermented foods have been shown to improve human health, based on the activity of potentially beneficial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts and their metabolic outputs. However, few studies have explored the effects of prolonged storage and functional spices on microbial viability of whole fermented foods from fermentation to digestion. Even fewer have assessed their impact on the gut microbiota. Our study investigated the effects of production processes on LAB and yeast microbial viability and gut microbiota composition. We achieved this by using physicochemical assessments and an in vitro gastrointestinal an...

Risk factors for hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes admitted to the emergency department of a hospital in French Guiana
CONCLUSION: Many avoidable risk factors for severe hypoglycaemia have been highlighted, in particular insulin dosing errors or non-compliance with recommendations for participants ≥65 years. Primary care physicians and homecare nurses need to provide preventive interventions and undergo training.PMID:34738244 | DOI:10.1111/dme.14736 (Source: Molecular Medicine)
