Variables that explain disordered eating behaviors among women: the mediating role of body dissatisfaction
CONCLUSION: The present study showed that body dissatisfaction partially mediated the relationships between influence of advertising, influence of social models, and anxiety with DEB among women. Thus, these variables should be taken into account in prevention and intervention programs targeting BED.LEVEL V: Evidence obtained from a cross-sectional descriptive study.LEVEL V: Evidence obtained from a cross-sectional descriptive study.PMID:38180595 | PMC:PMC10769902 | DOI:10.1007/s40519-023-01626-4 (Source: Eating and weight disorders : EWD)

Is cognitive behavioral therapy more effective than pharmacotherapy for binge spectrum disorders? A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Data are scarce, comparisons underpowered and, considering the inherent methodological limitations of psychotherapy trials, questions arise regarding the presumed superiority of cognitive behavioral therapy. Further research is needed.PMID:38179705 | DOI:10.1177/00048674231219593 (Source: The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry)

Body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents: a 20-year population-based time-trend study
This study assessed time-trend changes in self-reported body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents at four assessment points. Representative samples of adolescents (N = 6660) aged 13–16 years participated in school-based, cross-sectional studies in 1998 (N = 1458), 2008 (N = 2044), 2014 (N = 1809), and 2018 (N = 1349), respectively. The studies were similar in design, methodology, and geographical recruitment areas. Body dissatisfaction and dieting were assessed with a questionnaire including items derived from the DSM-IV criteria for anorexia and bulimia nervosa. From 1998 to 2018, d...

Family-based treatment (FBT) for loss of control (LOC) eating in youth: Current knowledge and future directions
This study is a secondary data analysis from a randomized controlled clinical trial (NCT00879151) testing FBT for 12-18-year-olds with BN. Data were reanalyzed to examine outcomes for LOC eating episodes, regardless of episode size. Abstinence rates, defined as zero LOC eating episodes (objective or subjective binge episodes) in the previous month, were calculated at the end-of-treatment (EOT), 6-month, and 12-month follow-up time points. Among 51 adolescent participants (M + SD: 15.94 + 1.53 y; 92% female; 23.5% Hispanic; 76.5% Caucasian), FBT significantly reduced LOC eating episodes, with 49% achieving LOC eating abstin...

Eating Disorders Increased Among “Atypical” Populations of Children
A study in Canada of nearly 12  000 pediatric hospitalizations for eating disorders has shown not only a 139% increase in these hospitalizations between 2002 and 2019, but also that the greatest relative increases were among traditionally “atypical” patients—males, adolescents aged 12 to 14 years, and those with eating di sorders other than anorexia or bulimia nervosa. A multifaceted approach to assessment of mentalization: the mentalization profile in patients with eating disorders
Nord J Psychiatry. 2023 Dec 22:1-7. doi: 10.1080/08039488.2023.2291177. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPurpose: The existing literature, however sparse, suggests an association between eating disorders (ED) and mentalization ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the mentalization profile (MP) in patients with ED. It was hypothesized that patients with ED would have a lower degree of mentalization ability compared to healthy controls (HC).Materials and methods: The study is based on a cross-sectional survey on a sample of patients diagnosed with ED compared to a HC group. Results and conclusion: A total of 88 part...
