Established and emerging treatments for eating disorders

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEating disorders (EDs) are common mental health conditions that carry exceedingly high morbidity and mortality rates. Evidence-based treatment options include a range of psychotherapies and some, mainly adjunctive, pharmacological interventions. However, around 20-30% of people fail to respond to the best available treatments and develop a persistent treatment-refractory illness. Novel treatments for these disorders are emerging, but their efficacy and clinical relevance need further investigation. In this re...

Fear of negative evaluation and intolerance of uncertainty: Assessing potential internalizing correlates of eating disorder-related clinical impairment and differences across diagnostic presentations
We examined relations between fear of negative evaluation and intolerance of uncertainty (core features of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, respectively) and ED-related impairment and potential diagnostic differences. We hypothesized that: (a) fear of negative evaluation and intolerance of uncertainty would be related to ED-related impairment, (b) the relation between fear of negative evaluation and impairment would be strongest among individuals with "binge-eating syndromes" (i.e., bulimia nervosa [BN], binge-eating disorder [BED]), and (c) the relation between intolerance of uncertainty and impairment wo...

Risk of low energy availability, eating disorders and food insecurity amongst development female rugby league players
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest LEA risk is similar to other populations and those at risk of LEA are more likely to have an elevated clinical risk of eating disorders. Food security is also an issue in this population and could contribute to LEA risk for some. Future research is needed amongst team sports athletes to understand interplay between eating disorder risk and food insecurity with LEA risk.PMID:38470016 | DOI:10.23736/S0022-4707.24.15600-9 (Source: Health Physics)

Facing Eating Disorder Fears: An Open Trial Adapting Prolonged Exposure to the Treatment of Eating Disorders
Behav Ther. 2024 Mar;55(2):347-360. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.07.008. Epub 2023 Jul 22.ABSTRACTEating disorders (EDs) are maintained by core fears, which lead to avoidance behaviors, such as food avoidance or compensatory behaviors. Previously tested exposure-based treatments for EDs have generally focused on proximal outcomes (e.g., food), rather than addressing core fears (e.g., fear of weight gain and its consequences). The current study tested the feasibility and initial clinical efficacy of 10 sessions of imaginal and in vivo exposure for core ED fears (termed "Facing Eating Disorder Fears"), mainly fear of weight gain...
